So the Saints started the offseason $25 Million over the cap.

Drew Brees retires, then they signed their backup qb to a $140 Million contract.

Then they sign their RT to a $90 Million extension worth 18mil/year (we resigned our RT Daryl Williams who is just as good for less than half the price per year)

These moves somehow put them under the salary cap.

It's so bizarre that teams are able to give out ridiculous contracts and actually end up freeing up cap space. It seems like they exploited some loopholes that should be fixed in the near future.

No don’t fix the loopholes - those are the same loopholes that the Bills will be using once they sign Allen to his extension.

The Bills already used some of those loopholes to sign back everyone and will continue to exploit them.

Yes, but the Bills were able to resign their players because they agreed to lower team-friendly deals. The Saints are intentionally inflating contracts that they will likely terminate or restructure after one season. The league needs to remove voidable years from contracts or we might as well just not have a salary cap at all.

If only Beane had foreseen the market for good offensive tackles skyrocketing and planned ahead by drafting a couple athletic marvels at the position...

No Loopholes - Ramzyck likely has no new money this year.  It's like if buffalo signed Josh allen to a 5 year contract extension next season.  He still plays under a 5th year option and then the bonus is spread over other years.

Next season they sit at 208M right now (pre-Ramzcyk).  Armstead and Lattimore don't have contracts yet.  And the only cap space they can really create is by converting salary to restructure bonuses and void years.  So you're essentially sacrificing future cap space to sign those guys.

I'm curious if A - they're still good without brees and B - if they keep punting the cap hits down the line to keep the team together.  They had a couple big wins over TB, but they lost to GB and KC.  Other than that the only other playoff team they beat was the bears...

the bonus goes over the first 5 years after signature not the first 5 years added.

next year they clear all that taysom hill funny money unless he proves to be a franchise qb

It's bad news for every franchise when a team overpays and ups the market for a players price.  Agents get cocky and players at the same position demand even more money.  CJ Mosley, Ragnow, Jalen Ramsey, Dak, Elliott and some recent safety deals are examples

Sure it's great for the players, but bad for the teams

totally agree.   part of a good gm’s job is to manage around this madness and when to let good players walk.  The Steelers were masters of this for a long time, esp. at LB

You can't sign everybody.  The saints definitely try to keep running it back with the same group though.

It is? Tell me more.

I don’t know. I’d like to see a breakdown of dollars spent each year for each team. Do you think it is close for all 32 teams?

Id guess there is ten or so teams way above the rest on actual money spent. Bonuses, salaries, total payroll for their roster.

Let’s see that over a ten year period.

Winston and Hill.

And no, both righty.

Maybe their left side sucks so bad that they expect either of them to get flushed to the right side?

The have one of the best LTs in the NFL.

They don't have a high $$ QB. And their OL is one of the best in football. Also Ramczyc is one of the best OL in the NFL. Depending on the scheme, RT is the 2nd most important position on the OL.

Don't see a problem with this really

NO is known for playing with the cap aggressively and Loomis takes risks.  I wonder what is really in the deal meaning when they can get out, how they can extend, rework etc.

These days I never take these contracts at face value. He may never see all of it.  Teams like this though usually pay the price at some point.  You can only kick the can so far.  They are counting on the new contracts so paying ahead.  That makes sense when they had Brees and a window.  Not so much with Winston and Hill.

From what I remember Jamis and Hill’s deals are basically one year deals with a low cap number in year one and then fully voidable after year 1. They are basically one year deals and then an option to give them a larger deal if they perform this year.

They did let a lot of talent walk and cut some contracts but they freed up a lot of space by restructuring. They likely will just keep kicking the fan down the road and then once they decide to rebuild they will tank a couple of seasons and eat a bunch of dead cap in a single season.

The dead cap almost always comes due but you can choose when you have to pay that bill and it only takes a season or two to dig yourself out.
