PromoTheRobot
A fifth ocean has been officially designated. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/jun/10/new-ocean-global-total-five-national-geographic?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other
LeGOATski
Yeah The idea of the southern ocean has been taught for a while. When I read it, I didn't understand what the big deal was, but was kinda surprised to find out it wasn't officially recognized.

The Avenger
Aw man, I was such a huge fan of the Drake Passage and now its been replaced - I haven't felt this down since Pluto lost its planet status...
Ridgewaycynic2013
'Globe' my foot... I have hand painted a number of old LPs to accurately portray the true nature of Earth. Don't ask me how everything on the bottom stays where it's supposed to. 🤔

BobbyC81
This is so dumb. With so much continuous water on the planet, how do you designate where they change? Are their buoys with signs saying “Welcome to the Southern Ocean”?
ExiledInIllinois
I don't know what kinda lies @Gugny & @BringBackFergy have been spreading, but I honestly thought there were 5 oceans already, that the Southern Ocean was already recognized. What a nothing-burger. 1 hour ago, ColeB said: This is so dumb. With so much continuous water on the planet, how do you designate where they change? Are their buoys with signs saying “Welcome to the Southern Ocean”? 60° S Latitude. Duh! It's definitely a defined and noticeable area. During the "Age of Sail"... The names, "Roaring 40s", "Furious Fifties", and "Screaming Sixties" were very really and defined areas. Just saying. Better than using a latitude line for 4 oceans going straight to Antarctica. ExiledInIllinois
AND... What are these people gonna do. Why is North North and South South? https://www.flourish.org/upsidedownmap/ Makes more sense that a continent be on top! Heck, this is what the astronauts see when then circle the earth 🌎! If you notice, "Southern Ocean" is already listed on these maps! The Upside Downers are handling it well!

And "Y'all come back now, ya heah?" signs when you leave the Southern Ocean?
