My wife came home today and asked me what is going on with gas prices.

We had some issues with Texas chill earlier in year which raised prices.

Other than for shopping and medical appointments I rarely leave house so while I knew gas prices were going up but not dramatically.

She said she could not get off the exit because cars were backed up two lanes to exit and that exit is on other side of light.

Apparently issue on East Coast is a ransomware attack on Colonial Pipeline

According to Boston-based Cybereason, DarkSide is an organized group of hackers set up along the “ransomware as a service” business model, meaning the DarkSide hackers develop and market ransomware hacking tools, and sell them to other criminals who then carry out attacks. Think of it as the evil twin of a Silicon Valley software start-up.

Cybereason reports that DarkSide has a perverse desire to appear ethical, even posting its own code of conduct for its customers telling them who and what targets are acceptable to attack. Also apparently protected are entities based in former Soviet countries. Fair game, then, are all for-profit companies in English speaking countries.

Folks are losing their minds here in GA too.

And it is that panic that is actually creating the perceived shortage. Idiots are once again "stocking up", aka hoarding, which is creating the scarcity to begin with.

They're still blue.  Bless their little hearts.

It’s already being resolved.

“Colonial Pipeline has initiated a restart of its pipeline operations after a ransomware attack forced one of the nation’s largest oil transporters to shut down, exposing vulnerabilities in America’s infrastructure and sparking gas panic buying across the southeast.

Pipeline operations restarted about 5 p.m. ET, the company said in a statement.”

Just another example of the need for significant infrastructure upgrades.

Or mask shortage which China knew ahead of time about and its factories were increasing output before known need.

Once the pipeline is back online, it will take a while for supply system to return to normal. It takes 15 to 18 days for a gallon of gasoline to flow through the line from Texas to its terminus in Linden, New Jersey, Albert notes.

I couldn't help but laugh as I drove past a couple gas stations here in NC today.  These people have probably burned off more gas than they even needed in the first place just idling in those lines forever.

JHC. That woman’s car is going to get sloshed with gas. Those containers aren’t anything close to waterproof. And that large container with the metal girding around it… also not designed for gas and it’s now unusable for anything else in the future. SMH 🤦🏻‍♂️.

More pipelines or better cyber-security?

Is it wrong that I hope those people encounter a spark and go up in a big gasoline mushroom cloud?

Cyber-security is part of the infrastructure, just as expanded broadband is. It’s not just the past centuries old roads and pipes.

The Colonial Pipeline is owned and operated by private energy corporations.

And? The US needs to develop upgraded cyber-security and standards to share with all public and private sectors. It’s too important to leave to a patchwork of solutions.

Maybe near Georgia but most people here get their gas from the port of Tampa. Got a link to this entire state of emergency?

Good to see someone keeping the dream alive of the US government creating and enforcing regulations on the Private Energy sector, as if THEY aren't the ones controlling the govt and writing the laws for themselves.

Maybe someday.
