Buffalo_Stampede Posted April 26, 2021 Posted April 26, 2021 (edited) You wonder if the 49ers are comparing Jones to Tua. Neither player is physically gifted. Jones ran the offense as well or better. I believe WR's at Alabama preferred Jones. The Shanahan's liked Kirk Cousins over the more talented RG3. Could be a similar scenario. Edited April 26, 2021 by Buffalo_Stampede
NewEra Posted April 26, 2021 Posted April 26, 2021 I put $100 on Lance when it was +260 this morning. The line is now +150.

I think Kirk does a good job for whatever team he plays for every year. There’s a number of quarterbacks like that, but that’s the only one I’ve been associated with because people thought I was trying to bring him here, which I was at the time. It’s not because that’s how you draw it up. If you’re going to draw it up, you’re going to draw the biggest, fastest, strongest and best quarterback in the pocket. So, I think that’s pretty ridiculous to say that, but I also tell you, I love Kirk. I know I’m not allowed to talk about other players, but Kirk’s a hell of a player and a lot of people would be lucky to have a quarterback like that.” This sounds like a coach intent on not winding up with a quarterback like Cousins. Shanahan’s reference to how he’d “draw it up” if he could at quarterback lends belief to the idea the 49ers trade up to No. 3 in this year’s draft to give themselves maximum control over who they pick. Trading three first-round picks puts Shanahan in a position to essentially pick the QB he wants – or in a position to “draw it up.”” https://www.google.com/amp/s/ninerswire.usatoday.com/2021/03/30/49ers-kyle-shanahan-kirk-cousins-nfl-draft/amp/ You know, they say Kyle Shanahan is an offensive guru but his favourite QB is Kirk Cousins. 2+2 is equalling 5 here.
YoloinOhio Posted April 26, 2021 Posted April 26, 2021 I hope this is right because I have my money on Lance, but I don’t think anyone knows except Shanny and lynch. Not even their scouts
ghostwriter Posted April 26, 2021 Posted April 26, 2021 Smart move is to take Lance, who in my mind is a mini Josh Allen. Sit Lance on the bench for two years behind Jimmy Garoppolo and your QB room is set for the next 5 or 10 years. Garoppolo is making $23M a year, which is nothing for a starting QB. Lance has everything you’d ever want or need in a QB, he’s just raw. 1

GunnerBill Posted April 26, 2021 Posted April 26, 2021 I have heard Lance from other places too. Interestingly though I heard that it was Lynch rather than Shanny who was initially infatuated with Lance's skillset.
ROONDOGG55 Posted April 26, 2021 Posted April 26, 2021 All this talk about it being either Jones or Lance has to be a smoke screen. The Jets are clearly targeting Zach Wilson, but had reps at Fields last pro day. If the 49ers were dumb, they'd talk up Fields with the Jets looking that way as well. I'm thinking the 49ers are huge on Fields and are hoping this talk pushes the Jets away from swapping Wilson for Fields. 1
D. L. Hot-Flamethrower Posted April 26, 2021 Posted April 26, 2021 I think after playing the Bills last year, Kyle and Lynch took a look at Josh, and said I want one of those too. I've said Trey since day one sticking to it. 3
machine gun kelly Posted April 26, 2021 Posted April 26, 2021 If they don’t trade Jimmy G. to the Pats, then my WAG is Lance. If a draft day trade then probably Jones or Fields. I don’t want to see Jimmy G. back in NE as BB can make something of him having two very solid TE’s and a couple of big WR’s. That is perfect for a Jimmy G. offense along with a decent running game. Then I would say the Cheats will get to 10-11 wins in a 17 game season. With Cam, it’s a top out of a 10 win season with the 17 season. I’m repeating as so many persons keep thinking in the world of a 16 game season and that’s reasonable as this is new. Please Jimmy stay in SF. I’m rooting for Lance even more than our 30th pick mainly because I trust Beane’s judgement, and don’t want to see JG back in the place I hate the most.

When Shanahan took over in 2017, the roster was in good shape except for a QB in which he traded for his guy in Jimmy Garoppolo and 2 years later they were in the Superbowl (2019 Season). So why would the 49er's give up on Garoppolo so fast or are they. Maybe they are making smoke screens and have someone else in mind to get them over the hump once again. And at 12 they wouldn't be in line to get their guy. By essentially trading up to the #3 spot that is like the pick to pick anyone in the draft other then T. Lawrence, or the kid our of BYU (you go Jets waste another pick). They have set themselves up to get Jimmy G. a major weapon on the outside in any of the three WR's they like, or pick K. Pitts TE out of Florida which would be a major weapon in their offense and it would give the 49ers two major TE threats to push the ball down the field in Pitts and Kittle (that would be a scary duo). So why is everyone saying the 49er's are going to pick a QB when they already have a proven one at the helm if he can stay healthy. This reminds me of the movie the Draft Day where the Browns had their guy and he was worried about getting traded or let go....(Pitts No Matter What). If that happened that would make the whole first round much more entertaining and stress free because I don't want Pitts going to an AFC East team. Thoughts..... Trey Lance

I pray that Belichick trades for Slimmy G. Let them give up a draft pick. We’ll be facing Cam as long as we don’t play the pats within the first month. 1

DCOrange Posted April 26, 2021 Posted April 26, 2021 It should be a choice between Fields and Lance IMO. Philosophically, I think you ask yourself if you believe it's easier to teach a promising young QB a new system (Fields) or take the promising young QB who's already comfortable in the system and coach up his footwork and accuracy (Lance). I don't think they can really go wrong between those two personally. I have a slightly higher grade on Fields but I think Lance will transition to the 49ers system more smoothly than Fields would. Might depend on if they truly want to keep Jimmy for this year or not; I think both can and probably should start as rookies but as I said, I think it's probably a smoother transition for Lance so if they took him, they could theoretically cash in on Jimmy in a trade now. With Mac, you're probably confident that he can run Shanahan's scheme, but aside from being a decisive passer, he hasn't really done the things that Shanahan expects of his QBs and he doesn't have the tools to excite teams either, so to me, he's a relatively low floor low ceiling option.

He is, but the way he improvs and breaks tackles is very Josh Allen-esque. Arm talent isn’t quite as good but good not great. I like small school guys with lots of talent versus guys from big schools like Alabama or Ohio State and I mean this strictly when it comes to QBs only and not other positions. Lance is playing with players who will likely not get drafted while Mac Jones and Justin Fields are playing with elite talent all around them. Lance put up a 28:0 TD:INT ratio which is incredible. I won’t deny that he is extremely raw but his ceiling is way higher than Fields or Jones. I won’t also deny that this guy will need top notch coaching but so did Josh. I always think it’s extremely wise to go for high ceiling guys when it comes to QBs, even if they have a low floor. Swing for the fences IMO. 2

This week its: Fields -125 Mac Jones +150 Fields +450 This would imply odds of Fields going #3 @ about 55%. I still can't get over Schefter outright saying Mac Jones will be the pick @ #3......and then kind of walking it back, but not really. I also know Warren Sharp believes it's Mac, as does Peter King, Chris Simms (Kyle Shanahans friend), & Michael Lombardi. I also know before the media scolded Dan Orlovsky for his less than rosy view of Fields, Greg Cosell was not a big fan of his in terms of a prospect. I think +150 on Mac Jones as it stands now is terrific value & I expect him to become the favorite again as the draft nears. And what makes you think Mac Jones is 4th on SF's board? 8 days later & Max Jones is back up to -300 @ most sportsbooks. I dont always handicap them this good, but this Mac Jones saga has been a real joy to be financially tied too because there's been so many irrational line movements.

I just find it hard to believe that a team would allow a leak like this without any basis for it. This is what leads me to believe that Fields has something to do with it. I didn't see any coverage of the Jets attending Trey Lance's 2nd pro day so it's safe that the Jets won't go after him. I also didn't see any reports of the Jets working with Mac Jones either. So again, what would the incentive be fore releasing this?? New Jets coach Saleh just came from the 49ers. I think he'd trust what his old boss's opinion on QBs if they openly wanted Fields over Wilson. 🤔 But again, we'll see what happens.
