There is some hint that it may be related to immigration from countries in which it is endemic. Haiti is one such country. I'm not looking forward to the anti-immigrant backlash, but yes, we do need to be aware that these things may be related and discuss what that means for immigration law and policy and appropriate screening/public health responses. The CDC published paper actually is making the opposite point: that leprosy is now endemic in Fla. Keep in mind the lead author is a soon to be intern in derm with an interest in world health and infectious diseases. Think we should all wait and see what the experts in Leprosy disease think...of course, if they don't believe the experts, they're on their own to do their own research.
