Polls show Democrats becoming party of elites as working class and minorities shift toward Republicans
Polls show Republicans are attracting more working-class voters, while Democrats focus on gun control and abortion laws

Republicans are starting to attract more voters in the working class, while Democrats are gaining more votes from wealthier Americans as midterm candidates make their priorities clear in the last four months before the election.

The majority of voters consist of working-class citizens, a group that has historically leaned Democrat. Minority voters are likely to see inflation as the country's greatest concern, but the Democratic Party has made clear its main priorities approaching the midterms are abortion, gun laws and climate.

Could the Great Lakes solve US shipping woes?

With major ports along the US east and west coasts struggling with cargo backlogs due to knock-on effects from supply chain issues caused by everything from China's Covid lockdowns to Russia's war in Ukraine, shippers are looking to long-ignored ports as a way to get supplies into and out of America.

One ship even sailed all the way from Shanghai to Cleveland last November - a forty-day journey that bypassed major ports in southern California, Virginia and New Jersey - to avoid the backlogs plaguing those locations.

The Port of Cleveland is working with a Texas-based company trucking cargo from the Gulf of Mexico up to Lake Erie - a 1,000-mile journey - to get its products shipped out to Europe.

"They can't get vessel or container capacity down there (in Texas)," said Mr Gutheil.

.

That’s right. Old Fred Douglass had his back to Lake Ontario printing out the truth and ready to flee to freedom in Canada if a racist mob came after him

You rang?

The St.Lawrence shipping season is March to November... Already a choke point there... Like article said

Could put them on barges... We already do business with the Gulf Coast petrochem industry.

The only way to GLs from Western Rivers is through Chicago.  That be me.  It ain't going downtown either, so it's gotta come up through the SouthSide here.  Lots a choke points here too.

Anyway... The move to intermodal has been around a long time.  The only thing with regard to containers on the inland waterways is pushing the empties.  Loaded containers can fit on barges and under bridges,  empties ride high and empty containers can't fit under the vertical controlling height... ~19.1'

...Is the container infrastructure there yet?

I guess get them to Lake Erie, but then, like article said... You got Welland Canal, St.Lawrence, and winter.  The SeawayMax fleet of the GLs is set up for bulk commodities... Can it handle intermodal containers...

I just see too many logjam, choke points going out the "NorthernDoor" and Chicago Area Waterways (CAWs) is the only waterborne "Southern Door." Containers are coming, I have seen a few... But the intermodal infrastructure just isn't there yet... More suited for bulk commodities, break-in-bulk...
