What are you even talking about? The extension for Matakevitch was a restructure to free up cap space this year in disguise. Upset we signed Taiwan Jones? Get over it. Most teams do these kind of signings every season. It's just not as paid attention to because it's not as sexy.

Maybe when Beane said at the end of the year that we wouldn't be big players in FA this offseason and that he was more focused on re-signing our own - you should have heard that instead of hearing we were going to sign RB's and other toys of the like.

The best teams don't go ham in Free Agency. Get used to it. It's a good thing.

Thanks for playing. “Third of the game” is another tired dead cliche repeated by meat head boomer head coaches.

Can someone point out what Super Bowl champion or hell, even recent contender, that dedicated this much money and effort to STers?

It flies in the face of modern NFLdom. Rule changes have basically eliminated the return game. Why are we signing top end STers to prop up this phase, instead of dedicating more money to the other phases that actually matter?

The ST coach’s job on a team that’s contending should be to coach up a bunch of cheap backups and late round draft picks into a decent unit. Not need dedicated gunners being signed to modest contracts.

It’s upsetting to say the least.

They did downgrade at punter and did not bring back one of the best returners in the game. So that should make you feel a little better.

That’s true. So glad we are no longer paying Andre Roberts to be a negative WR but good returner. Waste.

You're right.  What is Beane thinking???  What has he done for us lately???

Beane has no clue what he is doing.

We are doomed!!!

Does this really add anything to the discussion on the board? It’s not funny, it’s not clever and it completely lacks in substance.

Thanks for reminding me about that.  Still don't know how much cap they saved doing this.  It's not in Spotrac yet.

I guess this thread had some value for me!

They kept Taiwan Jones and Matakevitch.  The latter is also a decent backup LB; the former is a great gunner on special teams.  So really one guy on a roster of 53 at not much cost and we get complaints?  Get over yourself.

You would have said we should get rid of Tasker.

It has changed some , but field position is still statistically important concerning wins.  We are not spending huge money on it but great investment with Bass , cut bojo because of cost , and held onto our LS.  Bass was critical last year. We let Roberts go because of money as well. So your argument about spending too much has huge leaks.  Special teams now sets your teams field position and look up the stats on winning related to offense starting field position, or their chance to score tds.   When a hof coach like levy states how important s t play is, and a guy like Tasker also has that belief ( eg, if a guy lets a punt bounce vs catching it , you lose an avg of 20 yards on the exchange).  It’s the one play you purposely turn it over to the other team, so it will come into play at critical times.  Look up a recent interview of tasker on Buffalo fanatics ( Rico hosted) on YouTube , it was great and will change/ open your mind. Was done this week.

The New England Patriots. When they won the Super Bowl against the Rams they had Matt Slater, Nate Ebner and Brandon King who played ST only (combined 20 snaps on offense and defense between the 3). They spent about $6M/year between the 3 of them... that was just the easiest one for me to find... you asked for Super Bowl winner or recent contender... I met the requirement.

We’ve dedicated money towards two non-kicker players who only play ST... Matakevich and Taiwan Jones. Is there anyone I’m missing? For comparison there... Matakevich and Jones combined for 76 non-ST snaps this year. @FireChans

What a weird thing to be upset about.

I dunno. I don't like spending roster spots on special teams players that can only do one thing.  IMO there should only be four players on the team that only have one job. Kicker, punter, long snapper and starting QB. Taiwan Jones is a special teams gunner and that's all. There's NOBODY else out there that can do that and also competently play a position? It's not like Jones is knocking it out of the box in a Steve Taskeresque way as a gunner either.

Yeah I'm pretty confused as to what prompted this thread.

  • We signed a FA punter for less than what our incumbent punter would've cost.  Maybe OP thinks we should've gone with an undrafted rookie, but still this is pretty tame.
  • We re-signed Taiwan Jones, probably at roughly the minimum.  Every team has a few "core" ST players that mostly don't play their official position, so again, not sure why this would provoke outrage.
  • We let Andre Roberts walk for financial reasons.  This is the opposite of what OP is upset about.

All in all, it looks like we're focusing LESS on special teams in 2021 than we did in 2020.
