As many, many teams have learned in the past. If you have your guy at QB, you better be prepared to go up and get him. Because staying put is a recipe for getting locked out in this Draft IMHO..

I live in NC...Most of my immediate family down here are die-hard Panthers fans...They are all 100% convinced the Panthers will take Lance at #8...We'll see I guess, but IF so that's the 4th QB gone at #8 overall...That's a worst-case-scenario for the Pats leaving 7 spots above them for a team to jump up and grab Mac...

Should be interesting...Admittedly I hope they get locked out...B-)

This is true. I think the 49ers take Mac Jones as well. It would be awesome if the Pats stand pat and are stuck with Cam/Stidham again.

They're spending a bunch of money on signing good to above average F/As, none of whom will push them over into contending range when you've hollowed out your OLine, have the broken down version of Cam Newton as your QB, and don't have much WR talent.

All they're really doing is setting themselves up to pick at 15 - 20, so basically out of the running for a franchise QB. Unless their strategy is a 5 years of being mediocre, I don't get it.

Either rebuild or try to contend. They're doing neither.

Their strategy is to make some FAs look good and either trade them or get comp picks when they leave.

He is a very good GM. He sheds players before they bottom out.  He accumulates multiple draft picks.  He makes great trades.  He is just a terrible judge of collegiate talent.  Yet even with that he managed to draft the greatest QB in NFL history and probably the top 3 tight end in NFL history.

They had good-to-great drafts every year from 2010-2015. Lately, not so much.

Unless they do something else besides Cam and a rookie, Jonnu won't make much of a difference. Catching balls on a one-hop off the carpet still won't count.

Oh they will also sign a top flight receiver for sure.

FA just started.  Let’s wait and see what they do at QB.  The cam deal doesn’t mean anything

The FA QB isn't stellar.  Not much they could do

What has Jonnu Smith done to earn the praise you gave him and this contract?

I am going to assume this is a serious question.

He is big and athletic. If you put a safety on him, he will overpower him and if you put a LB, he will run by him. And he is a great end zone target.

If he can get 7 tds with Tannehill throwing to him in a Derrick Henry centered offense, you know Belichick can get at least that out of him. He scored twice against the Bills. And lest I forget, he is a pretty decent unselfish blocker as well. Bottomline

now that he is a Pat, I know there is an incentive to diminish his abilities and I hope he comes short but he was by far the best TE FA.

I had a faint hope Bills could get him. I suspect he got a great deal precisely because many teams including the Bills wanted him and the Pats had to outbid all of em.

There’s more than free agency.  Deshaun Watson, RW, Darnold, Winston, Ryan, trubisky, jimmy g, Fitz, Carr, Brissett, lock, mariota, Alex smith, Teddy, Dalton, trade up for a QB or draft mac Jones

theres a couple elite QBs that might be had in a trade and handful of QB that can lead a BB led team to the playoffs.  They’ve added some weapons and addressed every unit except RB in one day of free agency.  I think he could make the playoffs with the first 10 names I listed.  Possibly others.

Probably won’t be sB contenders unless they get Watson or RW.

Come on, he’s never broken 450 yards even once in his career.

And let’s not pretend the Titans only ran the ball, Tannehill still threw for 3900 yards and 33 TDs in 2020, not to mention he’s averaged 255 yards per game in a season and a half as Titans starter.

And AJ Brown and Corey Davis both missed multiple games, and he still didn’t break 450 yards.

Im not saying the kid is a bum, but this notion he’s some impossible guard and mismatch every time he lines up is not showing up on the field or the stat sheet.

Im not suddenly worried about the Pats because they signed a TE who averages 350 yards a season for his career.

He would have been a good get for Bills,

but not at that crazy price.  He’s now the 3rd highest paid TE in the league despite never reaching 450 yards in his career in an offense that’s been pretty good since Tannehlll took over.

People expect the Patriots to just become irrelevant because the Bills did after the 2000 season..............the Bills aren't going to get a 20 year free pass.......they barely beat the Pats in Buffalo last year.

Expect divisional dog fights with them even if their free agent haul turns out to be inefficient.   Going to have to earn it.

Texans are adamant they won't trade Watson.  And NE doesn't have the draft capital to convince them (or Seattle) otherwise.

I don't see NO letting Winston get away (and then what?), or SF getting rid of Jimmy G.    Why would NE want Trubisky?  Ryan's a million years old.

Would the Jets move Darnold to NE?  And then what would they do?  Draft another 1st round QB?

I love me some Fitz, but they aren't a contender with him.  Same for JAGS like Teddy, Dalton, Maritoa, Brissett.

No FAs will go there at this point, unless they overpay. It makes me smile.

Yup.  This is what I think is happening.

Would the Pats bring Brissett back to sit behind Cam?

I would not discount what the Patriots are doing.  They have improved their offensive and defensive talent today.  They will also get players back that opted out last year.  We won the division one year and made it to the AFC Championship game.  We can be proud and happy, but not smug.  We will have to earn it every year.

Yeah, they’re adamant.  So far.

My only point:  they’re in position to make the playoffs if they land a decent qB.  BB isn’t looking to miss the playoffs.  His ego is hurt.  It took a beating last year.  Even if he doesn’t win a super bowl....he just wants to win games and take his team as far as he can.  He hates being labeled as a loser.  Teams that don’t make the playoffs are the losers.

Watson and Wilson are the only ones on that list that might get that team to the playoffs next year.

Pats betting Cam has something left in the tank.  He almost beat the Bills so I won't rule that out. Cam is not the physical specimen he once was, but, he has a lot of starts under his belt, and knows how to handle the game.  They could do worse, especially if they draft a QB and let him sit a year or two.  Remember, Aaron Rodgers sate three years behind Farve.

He almost beat the Bills because we were afraid to let Allen play his game.

Isn’t a terrible judge of collegiate talent generally a bad a GM ? The myth of BB brilliantly moving on from overpaid stars is overrated. He could move on from those big contracts because Brady continued to win games. Belichick’s inability to find any talent on offense ended Brady’s tenure.

It's just one part of being a GM.  He found Welker, Gronk, and Edelman. They had solid OL's most of Brady's tenure. Oh and that guy Moss.... But you are right he never found any offensive talent to go with Brady.
