If he gets a better deal and he goes, he goes down a very good contributor to very good Buffalo Bills teams. He might stay because he likes team, the city, and the Bills culture - so Beane should talk to him and make a reasonable offer. Good point. If it comes to it, McKenzie can also return punts and kicks. Mckenzie has made me a bit more comfortable with his ball security. I like both players. But mckenzie can provide more versatility 1

There's no reason they won't carry both. I'm actually ambivalent (i voted make him an offer and if someone bests us, fine). Side note: I'm in NYC area and you should have heard how rueful fans were that they let Roberts go.

I was thinking that maybe instead of making offers to McKenzie as WR4 and Roberts as KR - we make an offer to Cordarralle Patterson to be both. Probably a crazy idea, but just a thought. isn’t Patterson basically Roberts? I assumed he was a meh receiver.
LABILLBACKER Posted March 13, 2021 Posted March 13, 2021 We already have a player who can easily return punts, kickoffs and run a fly route. McKittrick 2
Steve Billieve Posted March 13, 2021 Posted March 13, 2021 I've never seen anybody do what I've seen Roberts do. It's not like it's a big contract, surprised so many are willing to part ways. It would be like letting a great kicker walk. 1 2
Steve Billieve Posted March 13, 2021 Posted March 13, 2021 Signing him doesn't really effect the cap, why would you want to have to replace a top tier returner with amazing ball security. I mean sure, if he loses his job then cut him. 2

NeverOutNick Posted March 13, 2021 Posted March 13, 2021 Roberts scared me every time he touches the ball. He’s overrated. Let him walk and offer McKenzie a contract instead 1 1
John from Riverside Posted March 13, 2021 Posted March 13, 2021 If we had the 30 million of cap that was taken away from us? Yes. We dont.....so no

He should also be less expensive to sign. 3 hours ago, Warcodered said: It's probably one or the other. Agreed.
JMF2006 Posted March 13, 2021 Posted March 13, 2021 This is tough one for me. Last year 3/4 of the board wanted him cut and I thought the Bills needed to keep him. He had a pretty good year with only one major gaff. 1) At 33 how much is left in the tank? 2) Is a return only guy a luxury at this point with the cap taking a 15m dive? 3) I know busting one is great but wouldn't giving Allen the 25yd line be sufficient now? 4) There is a college coach who never returns punts....he just lets them drop and roll...why not? you never have a ST turnover that way. 5) So I say Vet minimum.....draft a return specialist and let them battle in camp....may the best return man win 1
machine gun kelly Posted March 13, 2021 Posted March 13, 2021 McKenzie is more versatile. Maybe a few yards less in avg. returns, but can do so many other things. Roberts is a luxury. 2

With respect to a bidding war for his services, I don't see that happening. All the teams are facing cap challenges, and no one wants to spend big bucks on a guy on the wrong side of 30. He's still very good and I would like to keep him.

I'm confident that we can find a replacement for him. This is pretty much where I am, although I'd say he's been excellent. 3rd in the league in year one and best in the league year two. He provided the offense with some sweet starting field position. But this is a business and I think they'd be best to invest in other areas. I'd hate to see him go, but it probably makes sense in the big picture. 1
stinky finger Posted March 13, 2021 Posted March 13, 2021 I appreciated his contributions, but it's time to move on.

If he could play WR or even be a core ST coverage guy, I would probably want to bring him back. Very good returner, but I’d rather resign Mckenzie and give him another shot at returns. The kid is electric I agree with your assessment of his value. He's a superior returner but is the difference between him and a late rd. draft choice worth the cap hit. Probably not, but McKenzie will get as much or more because he's more valuable as a receiver and jet sweeps guy. 1
