They went 7-8 this year with him starting. He signed late, had Covid, have maybe the worst skill players in the nfl, and had half of their defense opt out.

obviously, he isn’t the same player but I think people love just hating on him. By all accounts, he was a great teammate and they can draft a qb.  I actually respect Belichick for being loyal to Cam.

Stop with the people just love hating on Cam.  I thought he was one of the best players in the NFL 5 or 6 years ago.   The guy is an above average starter in the league who just came off a season where he threw 8 touchdowns in 15 games.

This isnt hate, its reality.   If he comes out and plays like an MVP this year, Ill eat crow, thats fine.   But where it stands he isnt a very good thrower of the football.

they paid him 1 million last year and said: “yeah, we like that *****. Let’s do it for much more!”

I will confess that I went to that link to check it because I would have placed a small monetary bet that you'd been duped by a fake Adam Schefter account, which as we all know abound.

But that actually IS Adam Schefter so unless someone took over his account for multiple tweets, it's real.  $14M for an "option" though?

he is getting 7 or 8 mill for the year everything else is tied up incentives.....he is brought back to be the backup/security blanket not the Pats starter.

Plans to come back to this thread when it because obviously they are signing him as a backup and not the starter.

That's a lot of dough for a backup, even one who could in theory mentor a new young gun.

The "Patriot Way" is an extreme version of "team comes first," where players are told that they're expendable and they're expected to shut up and do their jobs. For two decades, players not only put up with this, but took below market value contracts to do so, because they thought it was a great shot at a ring.

But Brady has proven that he was the reason that team had a great shot at a ring each year. So with "the patriot way" exposed, what player is eager to sign up for camp Belichick now?

This is exactly the situation New England finds itself in right now.

There are a few ways to attract free agents:

-  One is to overpay and be the top-bidder, which the Patriots pretty much refuse to do.

-  Another is to be a serious Super Bowl contender, which the Patriots no longer are.

-  Still another is to have a coach that guys enjoy playing for, which Belichick clearly is not.

No doubt that Belichick is a great coach.  But he's also an @$$, who pushes his players very hard and treats them like expendable chess pieces.  The organization itself has a reputation for not paying to keep talent, and instead building up compensatory picks and using the draft to restock the pieces around Tom Brady.  That system was great at keeping the winning ball rolling, and helping them constantly get salary cap bargains on veterans desperate for a ring.  Now that Brady is gone, it's going to be very hard to get that ball rolling again.

It's an $8 million deal with a ton of incentives. He has to be the starter to reach them.

Taysom HIll and Marcus Maroita make way more than he does.

These are good points, but I have a bad feeling NE's defense is going to be elite this season. They are getting some excellent players back (Hightower, Chung), and Gilmore will be healthy. And Belichick is the greatest defensive mind in the history of the game. Don't sleep on them.

Fair enough. But have to ask who else out there would've offered Cam this deal? They really had to exponentially increase his base from a prove-it K when his prove-it year was more of a has-been revelation? Don't get me wrong--any dime NE overspends on whoever they want is fine by me.

They have so much cap space it doesn't really matter. In fact, they probably need to overspend just to reach the floor. https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/cap/

Both of which are also more appealing bridge options than washed out Cam, imho.

Yeah but....(words I never thought I'd type)...$7 or $8M/yr is tip-top backup money.

Fitz earned $8M ($4M guaranteed) from the Dolphins last season.

IIRC, Jim K got that much in his record breaking deal when he finally inked for Buffalo in '86. :D

My guess is he will play the taysum hill type of roll to a certain degree.

Maybe get 5 snaps a game and comes in on 3rd and shorts and a few trick plays throughout the year.

Hard count specialist??

They do.  What would you say about the general perception around the league on the value/$ of that?

An elite D with a floundering O can succeed to an extent, or it can give you a 6-10 record.
