The Bills shut down KC’s passing game and they proceeded to run all over our D.

For me, we need a more prototypical DE who can set the edge and rush the QB. Is that him?

Well that was the game plan, right?  Let KC run all over us so we could slow down the passing game.  If we could have gotten to Mahomes with a four man rush then maybe we could’ve schemed differently and worried about CEH.

And exactly who are you planning on the Bills getting that is a quality Edge who can rush the passer at a high level and play the run well?  Serious question.  We’re picking 30th right now.  I don’t see a player like that as an option unless you want to project Oweh to that level.  That thought scares the heck out of me.

This. Not sure he has the frame or body type to carry the weight he would need to in order to make the adjustment to a guy who plays all 3 downs and puts his hand in the dirt as a d-end.

He has us taking Benajmin St-Juste in round 2. I really like St-Juste but that is early for him. I could make the argument at the back of round 3... he is that late day 2, early day 3 type for me. He is a scheme fit for Buffalo but he is limited athletically to go that high for me.

Yea, call me not in love with those picks by Mel.

Monson has the Bills taking Ojulari too in his latest PFF mock: https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2021-nfl-mock-draft-new-england-patriots-trade-up-mac-jones-cincinnati-bengals-jamarr-chase

30. BUFFALO BILLS: EDGE AZEEZ OJULARI, GEORGIA

Buffalo has been looking for a complement to Jerry Hughes on the edge for so many years that the team is almost needing to also find his replacement. Azeez Ojulari is arguably the best pure speed rusher in the entire draft, earning a 91.7 PFF pass-rush grade against true pass sets this past season. He is a little undersized and slight, and he may be limited to a situational role initially, but that’s something Buffalo has been crying out for.

Freeney plaid between 265-270lbs for his career, but was still lightening quick. Yannick is more likely of a comparison, but Yannick isn't elite either. Ojulari is not a 4-3 DE in this defense unless you basically want to tell teams to just run the ball to his side of the field where he will be mauled by 300lb+ OT's or pulling G's.

Freeney was a short pass rushing specialist who didn’t play the run well. Ojulari is likely a light pass rushing specialist who is likely to have trouble against the run because of his weight. I see them utilized in the same way by teams that are built to score and force opponents to pass.

Ngakoue has been an elite or near elite pass rusher starting from his second season.  He’s not great against the run, but he isn’t as bad as many make him out to be.  I see Ojulari similarly.  And as was pointed out by another poster, Ojulari was actually good against the run in college.  Him having issues there is a projection based in his weight.

And I am really tired of the “getting mauled by 300+ pound OTs” line.  Sure 320 lb OT vs a 240 lb DE sounds horrible, but it’s not that much different than a 320 lb OT vs a 260 lb DE.  Both of those DEs need to win with speed.  Also I’ll point out that we drafted a heavier, power DE last year in the second round and the Bills immediately had him lose a lot of weight.  Not that Ojulari is finished physically.  He’s got the frame to add some muscle.

I think Oujlari is the best pure pass rusher in the draft. Not a scheme fit per say but I would take the chance if he’s there at 30 I just think the Bills are leaning DB

I've read & watched a lot about Ojulari and he's really growing on me.  He seemed a bit undersized and more suited for a 3-4 but looked up Jerry's scouting report and the same was said about him.  That could be a pretty similar player comp as well.

On another note, I am stunned by how much is behind ESPN's paywall these days.  That's a massively profitable company and I swear half of their articles are ESPN+ only.

I've amended the bolded. My objection to Ojulari is that in this defense I am not sure he is ever more than a situational rusher. He is more Trent Murphy usage (though a more talented player, clearly) than Jerry Hughes.

Probably trying to add value to it. I already had Hulu and got Disney + for the kiddos, so the bundle basically throws in ESPN+ for free.

I can't honestly think of the last time this team had a good RT before Williams this season. Maybe Langston Walker or Peters over a decade ago? This team can find LT's so much easier than RT's which is baffling. Looking up on Pro-Football Reference the Bills lineup history and cross referencing it with my memory and this list since 2001 is a sad sack of players at the position. For 9 straight seasons from 2009-2018 this team simply couldn't find even an average RT. Don't let a good one go if you can.

2019- Combo of Ford and Ty not tragic but Ford was up and down and Ty was average at best. Definitely the best the RT position had looked in a decade.

2016-2018- Jordan Mills, they tried to replace him with Dawkins in 2017 but Glenn got hurt. Capable run blocker but terrible pass blocker

2014-2015- Seantrel Henderson- From what I remember he was below average and struggled with a medical issue.

2011-2013- Erik Pears-  I remember him similar to Mills as being a capable run blocker but horrid in pass protection.

2010- Mansifeld Wrotto - Who I have no recollection of but he must have been terrible as he was cut the year after.

2009- Kirk Chambers - I remember how terrible he was.

2007-2008- Langston Walker - This might be the only better than average player on this sad list who played more than one season. And even Walker wasn't a Pro-Bowl caliber player here.

2006- Terrance Pennington - No idea who this was but apparently he started 9 games at RT that season. Cut the year after and didn't catch on.

2005- Jason Peters - Definitely the last time this team had a Pro-Bowl caliber player at the position. Quickly was moved over to the left side.

2002-2004 Mike Williams - Showcasing that despite the high draft pick at the position this team still wasn't able to find a good player there.

2001- Jonas Jennings - A good player, much like Peters in 2005 he got moved over to LT after over performing at RT.

Where's Brad Butler on your list? He was coming along nicely before he unexpectedly retired at age 26?

He’s “undersized” by height and weight 6’2 1/2 and 249 but he has crazy long arms and giant wingspan ... both things McDermott seems to covet.

McDermott to me favors larger DEs in terms of height, I mean Darryl Johnston, Obada and Espensa are all 6'6" as was Trent Murphy so not sure Ojulari fits the profile but Rosseau does. Yet not sure we got DE first round, I think CBs the spot and Eric Stokes seems to fit zone defense and athletic freak we favor with top picks.

The certainty people sometimes have about draft prospects is wild to me.

I respect the analysis and opinions of our resident draft experts, I truly do. But to say with near 100% certainty that a prospect can only play a certain scheme, or that he’ll definitely not be able to stop the run in the pros...I dunno.

It’s all forecasting and informed guess work. The same type of forecasting and informed guess work that results in all sorts of unexpected busts and diamonds in the rough.

I guess I just don’t see much room for certainty in the draft prognostication game.

That certainly could be the case & I would be okay with Rousseau...he is certainly a very large human being 😄  But maybe we already have enough bigger guys to consider Ojulari if he's still there at 30 (I honestly don't think he will be).

Stokes would be a nice pick but might be a bit of a reach at 30.  If we got any edge player in the first round and Stokes in the second I'd be very happy.

Height should always factor in wingspan. It's why Hakeem Olajuwon, who was 6'10", played like he was 7'1".

The next Derrick Thomas, perhaps?

Azeez Ojulari bio, stats, and highlights.......kind of the same as Derrick's

One last thing.....every time I hear the name Azeez, it makes me think of this...

I wasn’t trying to argue, was seriously asking if the guy in question could set the edge. My fear is that if we get a guy who can only do one then we’re leaving ourselves open for the other.

No idea who that person is right now...I didn’t watch enough NCAA this year, unfortunately.

I met Derrick Thomas once briefly when he was opening his bar in Birmingham. Very cool man and came across as humble. Sadly, we lost him shortly thereafter.
