Might be the worst call I've seen in my life of watching football. I'm not being hyperbolic. That FG was wrong on so many levels.

Similar to the Gregg Williams situation.

It's a tough business.  That one play probably DID decide that game, but still seems extreme.

It's not similar. Gregg was presiding over one of the worst defense in the league. Not a top ten defense.

I remember when he was the DC for the Bills. I liked the guy, and was sad when he was hired by the Browns to be the HC...

but all I can remember his his D couldnt STOP THE RUN.

Rodgers said he didn’t run on 3rd down because he thought he would get 4th down but it sure looked like he could make it from most camera angles.

So in one post you contradict yourself.  Well done.  Pettine has always been overrated.  The great Rex Ryan coaching tree.

And yes, one horrific call in a crucial situation in the NFC Championship is worth making a big deal over.  That was an absolute killer; just as bad, and in an infinitely more important situation, as Greggo’s Cover 0 vs. the Raiders that got him fired.

If you can’t comprehend evaluating three years of work versus 1 defensive series I don’t know what to tell you.

You seem to be hell bent against Pettine.  I don’t care one way or another, I just think that overall he did a good enough job and feel that these firings were done to deflect the heat that LaFleur himself faced.

isn’t it amazing how NFL teams make such fickle and short-sighted decisions? You can go 14-3, have a great year, and lose your last game because your offense stalls— and then you get axed.

According to some that defense in one series was enough to get Pettine fired.  Glad most of us take a more logical approach.

Ok, so I am not a Pettine guy.  And I think total yards on defense doesn’t nearly tell the whole story.  I think the most predictive defensive statistics are points (obviously), yards per play, 3rd down defense, and red zone defense.  Were they top 10 in those?

I am leaning more and more towards the notion that you win championships in this league by building an absolute beast on offense and then having a “pretty good” bend-but-don’t-break defense that does well when it counts.

They were 13th in points this year and 9th last year. They were 22nd his first year coming off years of 21st and 26th in Dom Capers final two seasons. They were also 8th best in the redzone and 10th best on 3rd down in 2020.

I am not a big Pettine guy either (I am a 4-3, cover 3 and win with your front 4 guy stylistically) but there is absolutely no doubt the Green Bay defense has been better under him, especially the last two years, than any point since they were competing for Superbowls a decade ago.

It is a really harsh firing.

Big picture, people!  The Pack knows Glugg Williams is out there, and wants to get him into the organization ASAP. While his defense is using brass knuckles on the opposition, Gregg will be 'Iagoing' his way through the GB coaching hierarchy.

They finished 9th in total defense. Their best performance in 10 years.

He didn't call a great game against Tampa but this does feel a little reactionary to me.

I know Pettine’s defense finished 9th overall, 7th against the pass, and 13th (which is not bad) against the rush.

Reactionary posts are the bread and butter for some on TBD

Even if he didn’t score, he would have gotten to the 2 yard line.

I basically agree with you, but there is this too: https://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/202001190sfo.htm. The Niners sliced and diced the GB defense in the previous NFC championship game, and GB had no answers. It might be a case of “I need a coordinator who can do better against elite teams in the biggest games, because we’ll be there next year too given our terrible division.” Just a thought.

Sure, but as has been said in the second half of that game last week the Green Bay defense did its part and it was Rodgers, LaFleur and the offense that didn't bring it home. Feels a bit to me like when Rex's defense got destroyed by Fitz and his reaction was to fire Greg Roman.

Should be some delicious schadenfreude for the segment of our fanbase that doesn't understand the game past fantasy football.

The first half counts just as much as the second half! In the first half, TB had 226 yards, no three and outs, and 21 points all legitimately fueled by offense.

Obviously it was Pettines call ;)

I know our D can hold the Goat to a 3 and out...go ahead and kick it ;)

So with a new DC do the Packers regress and where is Icebowl ;)

The QB already tossed the HC under the bus for that....
