He’ll be fighting Boettger and whomever else they bring in at Guard for a starting spot. We’re looking at a battle in both guard spots unless they manage to bring in a top FA. My opinion is that Ford could make a solid leap if he can get a full off season in one guard spot or the other. We’ll see how it plays out. 6 hours ago, Hapless Bills Fan said: Back in da day when Le'Veon Bell was a featured back running for 80-100 ypg, wasn't he said to have a unique, patient running style where he would delay to get to the line of scrimmage and let holes develop? I believe one pundit christened him "The Great Hesitator". So if we want "burst to the line", going hard after Bell would not seem like the way to go. What’s lost in their commentary is how good Bell was at manipulating LBers by pressing lanes and setting up blocks while being patient. His ability to get LBers to hesitate helped his linemen. That skill seems gone now, but it was something I look for now in RB prospects.

Beane said all the same things about Matt Milano that he said about Jordan Phillips. and yet, in his press conference, he kind of sounded like in retrospect he thought losing Jordan Phillips hurt the team, so.... The most important part of what he said was that Milano himself wants to test the market.

According to Spotrac, Morse's cap hit for 2021 is $10.35 mil and his dead cap hit is listed at $5.5, so they'd save almost $5 mil if they release him. Some interesting tidbits from Beane related to Morse: he's not going to over-power a DT; he commented on how well they ran the ball against the Pats when Morse was out. I'm wondering if they think they need someone else who would better anchor the middle? Morse will be cut. 1 minute ago, Coach Tuesday said: The most important part of what he said was that Milano himself wants to test the market. Reading the tea leaves Milano is gone. In the past, that's Beane's code-word for cases where he senses that the market valuation for a player is higher than the Bills valuation or willingness to pay. 1

The choices a team has when tendering a guy are 1st round, 2nd round, or original round. When a guy is undrafted, as Boettger was, an original round tender is meaningless as far as draft pick compensation from the signing team. The difference between an original and 2nd round tender is typically a bit over $1M. Decent explanation here. If you recall, we had some dilemmas with that a while back. Interestingly when mentioning the OL, Morse, Feliciano and Williams etc I haven't heard him mention Boettger. 1

I would personally have to prioritize signing Williams and keeping Feliciano over keeping Milano 😪 On the other hand....maybe some guys will talk to him about the difference between being on the Bills and being on some other teams or part of some organizations that aren't as cohesive and he'll be selective. There are only a few teams that have cap space plus good culture, then add in a team that would make good use of his physical talents.

I’d rather cut all those guys, keep Milano, and invest in young dline in the draft. I don’t know that you’re going to find a premier pass rusher in FA. Certainly not one that won’t command a ton of $. I agree they are critical to have. A really good pass rusher that can change a game is something we’ve lacked for a while now, but I’d invest some draft picks in the dline. At least 2 picks on the dline and maybe grab 1-2 decent (but not high priced) guys in FA. Keep Jerry on another year if you can to teach the young cats. Do you think you'll find a ready-for-prime-time sure thing pass rusher, AND rebuild the DL, in the draft? People like to criticize Beane's drafts for producing "OK" players instead of difference makers, but keep in mind that overall, the success rate in the first 3 rounds of the draft to even produce solid, contributing players is about 30% - higher in the first round, maybe 50%, lower in the third, maybe 20%. (I promise if I picked an objective criteria that includes 40% overall you would look at it and say HE'S included? and HIM? and HIM?). There are all kinds of reasons for that - injuries, loss of motivation once paid, skills that didn't really translate to the NFL as projected. It is not a realistic plan to expect to maintain a good defense whilst cutting or letting 4 starters walk and rebuilding in the draft and with low priced FA.

Dkollidas Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 Idk. I know we try to read into this a lot. The only things i really came away with is... 1) Expect them to look for a speed rusher in the front-7. Either a DE, or a LB in the Lorenzo role. 2) continued re-tooling of the offensive line. 3) Speed added to the offense at RB and WR 4) a consistent, veteran TE added. -I think he is being genuine when he states letting Milano go test the market, because at this point he doesn’t know what the salary cap will be.
Estro Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 After listening to Beane, my between the line thoughts were as follows: FA's 1- Jon Feliciano - They want him back and they'll probably be able to get him back because he's not a break the bank type of FA. 2- Matt Milano - I think they really want him back, but they know he's going to be looking for more than what they want to spend. Beane brought up his availability as a problem, and used the word "good" player on a couple of occasions......I think Beane was posturing a bit, they want him for $11.5-$12M a yr....he probably wants $14-15M. Can he get it on the open market? In a normal FA yr. I think he could, hut there won't be the same money out there this year. Thus one really seems like a 50/50 proposition, but I do believe the Bills want him back more than they are publicly willing to admit. Likely a 3rd round compensatory pick if he leaves. 3- Daryl Williams- Got the feeling the Bills won't be buying high on Williams. They git a great yr out of him, but Beane didn't sound like a guy that wanted to bet on Williams long term. I think they'd have him back on a team friendly deal, but I think there will be other teams willing to go where the Bills won't be. Possible 4th/5th compensatory pick in next yrs draft if he leaves. 4- Matt Barkley - Beane was very complimentary and thankful toward Barkley and his wife. Had the sound of a good bye to me. Pretty sure he won't receive an offer from the Bills unless it's vet min. & I don't think Barkley would play for that. Possible cuts: John Brown - I think hes gone Lee Smith - Gone V. Butler/Q. Jefferson/M. Addison - I think 1 of these guys is definitely cut, 2 is possible and it wouldn't shock me if all 3 are let go. Beane admitted that if they knew what the cap was going to be this coming yr. They wouldn't have signed all the DL they did. That to me is an admission that 1 or 2 of them will have to go. I'd say Vernon Butler is the most likely to be cut as his game is most similar to Stars (assuming he comes back, which maybe he wont). I would put Addison as the next most likely l, considering his age (34) and a very so so yr in '20 Mitch Morse - This one is tricky. Cutting him saves them only $2ish M in cap space, but doing so basically admits this was a big whiff of a signing. They've paid him nothing of $28M over the last 2 yrs., he's only due $7.5M this coming season. I think he sticks around for 1 more yr. Because the $2M cap savings isn't enough to justify cutting him. 1
