Tux of Borg Posted April 24, 2005 Posted April 24, 2005 http://www.azcentral.com/offbeat/articles/...ation20-ON.html Judge holds troubled teen's PlayStation 'hostage' BRANDON, Man. - A judge is holding a teen's PlayStation video game machine "hostage" to entice the 14-year-old to do well in counseling. "If you want the PlayStation back, you'll work on the counseling," Judge Krystyna Tarwid said in Brandon provincial court. The teen, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was convicted of two counts of assault and theft under $5,000. He received one year of probation during which he is to seek counseling for substance abuse, anger management and theft prevention. The judge ordered the PlayStation, which the youth told a bail officer he uses as an alternative to marijuana for entertainment, be turned over to the court by May 15. Tarwid said she will return it by September if she feels the youth is progressing. Court heard the 14-year-old bolted from a video store March 28 with 10 DVDs inside his jacket and hopped into a waiting cab. The store manager, who ran after him and grabbed him, was hit in the face and kicked in the shins. Eventually the manager was able to get the youth under control until police arrived. In another encounter, the teen approached a second youth in a hallway at school and demanded his baseball cap before flicking it off his head, Crown lawyer Rhian Opel said. When the other teen refused and pushed him, the 14-year-old shoved him back and jumped on him, punching him several times in the head. The young offender must also abstain from alcohol and drugs and not possess any weapons during his probation.
