Good $ move by Marrone at the time.   So smart of him to put that clause in his contract.  He knew Ralph was on the way out and protected himself.   And sure enough got caught smack in the middle of an owner transition where he was unlikely to be kept, as Pegs would likely get their own front office and coaching staff.  Smart guy/smart agent .   I thought it was brilliant career management at the time and still do.   And he dropped into a really good HC situation in Jax and had a good year there until Bortles turned out to suck and Tom Coughlin the dictator a-hole drove all the good players get away.   As Bills fan know oh so well, without a franchise QB in todays NFL, you are just spinning your whells. So say want you want, but the guy went 9-7 with the Bills, Pegs said no, then he had Jax in the AFC title game, so there's that.

“For me, obviously, the past is the past,”

It's obviously the last game of a disappointing year. It's a start of a new year.

“I look at the games obviously differently,”

"Make no mistake about it, I don't want anything coming out wrong, obviously we're very disappointed in where we are.”

"We're going to rest him and be cautious with him," Marrone said. "But obviously, he obviously feels like he will play and wants to play."

Same here, never thought he was worth a crap and he proved it in Jax.  He and his cronies ran that team into the ground, good riddance.

He did make a good move for himself at the time.  I didn’t blame him and was happy he left.  The problem, he is a giant leader of cronies and took all the bad hires with him and got Coughlin running the team.  He had a loaded roster and unofficially (the officials took it away) won the AFC Championship.  Once he didn’t have top line talent, he and Bortles both crumbled.

PS I still want Bortles as our back up, foolish that we kept Barkley and let him sit on a practice squad all year.  His game is so close to Allen’s, it’s a way better fit at back up.  Obviously, he’s not in the same universe as Josh’s level of success, but he’s still better than Barkley and I would feel pretty confident in his ability to keep the O going in the event Josh was out.  He did pretty well when surrounded with a lot of talent, but he’s not good enough to carry a team that has none.  There’s talent here.

I suppose, but then again you could say Adolph Hitler ran a crack organization until the wheels came off it.  It doesn't mean we have to like him either. 😁

What a marrone.  Look at this trio of egos:

Greggggggg

marrone

Rex

Apparently someone in the Bills front office was a fan of egotistical asswholes.

How'd that work out for you, Dougie?

He has more playoff wins than McD. Made more money too.

I'm glad we have McDermott. Let's not forget that Marrone took a Jags team led by the immortal Blake Bortles to the AFC title game and nearly won

Well, Rex took the Jets to the AFCCG twice...with Mark "Butt Fumble" Sanchez, so...

When he was hired, I remember thinking, "this guy won the ***** Pinstripe Bowl!!! We got ourselves a real HC!!!"

Turned out that wasn't really the best litmus test.

In seriousness, Marrone was hired into just about the biggest dumpster fire in the NFL.  Inept ownership.  Inept front office.

Was he great?  No.  But when he left, the Bills had a winning record and a top defense.   I never blamed him for bailing with all of the uncertainty.  I think he did the best job he could being the head coach of a horribly managed team.

I mean...true.

I just ask myself: would McDermott walk out on this team? Can I ever envision him doing something like that?

I honestly don't, and we are much better off for it.

Nope.  Marrone quit.  There's no honor in that.

He didn't quit.  There was an out in his mutually agreed upon contract and he took it.  That's not quitting.

I guess we interpret contract verbiage differently.  That's okay.  Could be worse.  Happy New Year, Doc!

I don't  agree with that.  The story at the time was that Pegula offered him an extension and based on how long the Pegulas kept Lindy Ruff Darcy Regier (and later, Doug Whaley), there was no reason to expect the Pegulas to clean house.

I assume one of the reasons he didn't get hired by the Jets as he seem to expect was his quitting on the Bills.

No, I understand what you're saying Gug.  But no one forced him to opt-out.

And Happy New Year to you as well.

I really couldn't stand him.  He is right at the top of my list of the coaches I hated the most during his time here if not right at #1.  To recap:

-He was unbelievably arrogant for a guy who hadn't accomplished squat as an NFL coach.  Stories backed that up as none of the players liked him.

-He was a phony.  He grew up outside of the NYC area but remember when he was hired he tried claiming having a background as a WNYer

-Which is pretty funny because at the same time he seemed like he felt like he was too good for Buffalo...remember the whole St. Doug thing?

-The way he quit on us at the end showed his true character even though it was a blessing for us

-It always bugged me that a decent amount of Bills fans saw him as a good coach because he got us to 9-7.  I get it because fans are going to always try to look at their team with the most optimism possible but it goes to show you how low the standard was here after the Jauron and Gailey years that people were actually excited about where we were under Marrone

I know we still had to suffer through the Rex Ryan clown show for 2 more years after Marrone but I'm so thankful we have a coach like McD now who is everything I always dreamed of wanting to have in a head coach in Buffalo during the drought years.  It's so true when they say a football team takes on the character of it's head coach and McDermott is a leader of men.  Complete opposite of a guy like Marrone the Phony in every way.

I don’t know if it seems like longer or like it was yesterday. It seems like a different world.

Blessing in disguise! Afterwards, the Pegula’s listened to Russ Brandon, hired Rex Ryan, then realized they made a mistake. Next time around, they did their due diligence, knew who to listen to, as well as not listen to [Russ Brandon] and hired the best Bills HC in decades [McDermott]. Thanks again Doug for quitting on us and putting the Bills on the right path!

Totally happy to be where we are now but I would have much rather had Marrone stick around than watch the Rex Ryan clown show

not after seeing how he did in Jacksonville. Much less how the bills are doing now.
