Because if you extend and the receiver counters...they’re gone, especially a receiver like Tyreek Hill. White has the experience and moxy over Claypool.

It worked because Claypoole, being a green rookie, never looks at Tre before ball is snapped.  Never saw it coming.

A veteran WR could make him miss and if man to man would be wide open

PFF didn't rate Tre on this so he still ranks 27th among NFL CBs

I’ll have to watch the All-22 but it looked to me as though he slipped as a result of the push. A number of Steelers players slipped last night (including on Diggs’ TD).

Claypool has been tearing it up but was almost non-existent in yesterday's game except for a few short catches.

To clarify - Contact is allowed within 5 yds... Absolutely mugging a WR is allowed within 1 yard (within reason - you can't choke slam one - See the niners linemen that did so to Diggs last week).

 

Frankly - it's a great play by White. Claypool is a rookie and didn't use his hands to get off the jam. He also got jammed so hard he fell down - I don't think White expected all that force  to go straight back - usually a WR will shift one way or another and he has to move. Regardless... That's what you can do to soft or inexperienced WR to dictate a game.

If Tre still fell down, absolutely.  I don't think he was expecting the pancake.

Just a point I think it was a calculated risk for them....they had 2 other defenders in the vicinity so I think the plan was if Tre got beat one of them would pick Claypool up while Tre regrouped.

Yeah. The rule still exists in that form because of play action. Without that allowance DTs would get penalties for tackling a RB on a play fake. The refs are just less forgiving on these calls with CBs because they’re out in the open and, well... it was what Darth Hoodie did to stymie the greatest show on turf.

WR's train in using their hands and sudden movement to get off the jam. Claypool did not seem to realize it was coming so didn't brace himself or do anything to counter.

 

Most times the WR is ready and they engage the CB too and try to swipe their hands off. Claypool was just not ready.

In the olden days DBs and LBs could blast receivers from the snap until the ball was in the air. It was called “bump and run” in the seventies. Before then it was just called good defense like the head slap and grabbing the face mask.

Very similar to the play Tre jumped Offside.  Just a second before the snap - Tre drove right into the middle of Claypools chest to knock him off stride and prevent him from getting down.

 

The timing is critical and only works if you can hit the WR and not get knocked off stride.  If you tried that with a veteran WR like Diggs - he has moves designed to counter and then blow past you once the DB is off balance.  Claypool is not there yet, but this will be a learning experience for the rookie.

The Dlineman that tackled Diggs did get called for holding.  Josh even pointed it out to the ref during the play and then threw the ball downfield once he saw the flag.
