New York Times: Democrats Suffered ‘Crushing Losses’

“Democrats Suffered Crushing Down-Ballot Losses Across America,” says a post-election analysis by the New York Times.

The November 28 article credits President Donald Trump’s populist coalition for the Democrats’ loss of seats in the House and — worse — the Democrats’ failure to gain control of more state legislatures before the critical redistricting in 2021.

Across the country, suburban voters’ disgust with Mr. Trump — the key to Mr. Biden’s election — did not translate into a wide rebuke of other Republicans, as Democrats had expected after the party made significant gains in suburban areas in the 2018 midterm elections. From the top of the party down to the state level, Democratic officials are awakening to the reality that voters may have delivered a one-time verdict on Mr. Trump that does not equal ongoing support for center-left policies.

Trump’s coalition is built on the populist claim that Americans’ economy should help all Americans, not just a sliver of billionaires, elite professionals, or a wave of foreign migrants in a claimed “Nation of Immigrants.” For example, on November 23, moderate author Christopher Caldwell wrote in the far-left New Republic magazine:

Trump didn’t sell out his supporters. In fact, his presidency saw something extraordinary, even if it was all but invisible from the country’s globalized cities: the first egalitarian boom since well back into the twentieth century. In 2019, the last non-Covid [Chinese coronavirus] year, he presided over an average 3.7 percent unemployment rate and 4.7 percent wage growth among the lowest quartile of earners. All income brackets increased their take. That had happened in the last three Obama years, too. The difference is that in the Obama part of the boom, the income of the top decile rose by 20 percent, with tiny gains for other groups. In the Trump economy, the distribution was different. Net worth of the top 10 percent rose only marginally, while that of all other groups vaulted ahead. In 2019, the share of overall earnings going to the bottom 90 percent of earners rose for the first time in a decade.

Agreed. Also bad in the House.

Don’t see them crying about the rigged election either.

Eh, news flash Republicans have veto proof majority in red states.

Would have liked to see better results but it is what it is. Democrats must sure be terrible at this election fraud to let all that happen.

2022 will come and with no Trump on the ballot we will probably see a similar 2018. Especially since it’s doubtful Biden will pass anything in 2021 or 2022 that would energize the red vote.

Redistricting will happen but 1) the main Republican who was doing crazy discrimination in state redistricting projects passed away and 2) the Courts are starting to take a harder stance of racist Republican redistricting like they did in North Carolina.

The riots of the summer obviously had a negative affect on down ballot Democrats. That's pretty bad news, because what sparked the riots? Police killing people.

I think many would say they could see this coming a mile away...the moderates in my party are being silenced by the radical woke Left wing.  People are not stupid.  When they see people allowed to riot and not be charged, burn down businesses and be supported by the local politicians, something is not right...

This country was all on the same page after the George Floyd killing, and had the rioting never happened, I have no doubt my party would have swept the elections...sadly, however, Marxists saw this as an opportunity to seize on the anger in the country to wage their “revolution”, as they like to call it...Hopefully, Biden will be able to keep the socialists, in our party, at bay...

To use the term “more riots” would insinuate that cops already stirred up riots...do you have proof of this or are you just being hyperbolic? Asking for a friend...😉

Chocking a dude to death with cameras rolling,, people screaming and him begging to breath? Shooting an unarmed dude in the back seven times, breaking into a house and killing a women in her sleep, that’s why the riots happened.

And who who did that help politically?

Fair enough...I wasn’t sure what you meant, but I can now see where you’re coming from...

I guess I just had a different interpretation when I hear “stir up riots”...I think of bull horns, bricks or other projectiles, even money being provided, with in “intent” (key word) to instigate mass violence and/or chaos...

Thats why I didn’t understand how cops stirred up riots...To me, certain law enforcement may be overly aggressive, criminally negligent, even racist...But I never considered them to be stirring up riots, considering their number 1 priority is to get home, alive, at the end of the day...

But, given your interpretation, I understand your perspective better...thanks...👍

You mean Thanksgiving with family (huge Covid parties here) and a Bills game (another big Covid party) after a bye might be taking up my time?

Sorry, I'll continue your regularly scheduled  education as normal after Christmas and the New Year.

Thanks for checking in like a good student tho.

And btw.....you needed a rigged election, the turnout to be 65%, and you LOST seats.

Whats going to happen in the mid term without 24/7 Russians and Trump to enrage the left and drive their 2018 turnout?

After 2 years of watching the AOC wing try and pass the BREATHE Act (no word yet on Biden's position he hasn't been told what to do yet) and Lord knows what else they'll try.

There is a reason you aren't hearing anything from them right now.   They are terrified of what this means for the House.  They go full statist loon, the Rs still control redistricting that will take affect in 2024....losing the House in 2022 would be a disaster especially going in to the 2024 election with Kamala as nominee.

Told you.  This election was near worthless.

That being said, Georgia will impact a lot.  Even if Ds were to steal both those seats, at 50-50 and a House that was just put on notice, we may see them opt not to go full crazy.......but I highly doubt it.

Huh????

Trump lost by 74 electoral votes and over 6 million votes across the nation or 4% of the voting population... and still counting.

The truth is that a year ago the Senate really wasn't in reach and despite COMPLETELY neglecting all the down ballot races in the general, the Republicans must rely on 2 runoff elections in a state their Presidential candidate just lost in order to hold one of the remaining houses of congress after losing the Presidency.

That's part of it.  Some candidates calling for slavery reparations, medicaid for illegal citizens, free college, complete college loan forgiveness, and the banning of ALL fracking should scare the hell out of people.

Biden was the only one in the field who could win and it took a poorly handled pandemic optically by the Trump administration to make me realize that.  I give credit to Clyburn, Obama, and the rest of the DNC players to go all in on Biden right before Super Tuesday to avoid Sanders becoming the nominee.  Based on Biden's announced potential cabinet appointments so far, they are thankfully giving the finger to the socialist wing of the party.

To lose president definitively but make up ground in the House is rare and as someone said above, perhaps a sign that there’s some sanity left on the right.

I had 8 races on my ballot. I voted for two Dems, Biden being one.
