  Prowse's career predates SW as he was a contract player for Hammer Studios in Great Britain.  He did a fair number of horror pictures including the  Frankenstein series where he appeared as the creature 3 times.

David Prowse was 6'6", wore heeled boots, and had that huge helmet on.

 

He never came across on screen as being that gigantic.  He certainly didn't look short (!) but the top of his helmet must have been somewhat close to 7 feet tall; he never looked THAT tall to me.
