If it wasn't for the "athletic" part of the clue I would guess Andre the Giant. He is dead and French. Wrestling is somewhat of a "sport".

I was gonna swing on Andre yesterday.   But figured wrestler is an athlete.   Even if it's "fake wrestling."

It would be a good guess. That is the only person I can think of even though wrestling isn't a real sport. That is why I wouldn't call Andre an athlete. Plus he was huge and never really in good shape.

Not a competitive sport, but an activity that requires some athleticism. But it was just part of his overall job.
