Yep, I thought of Lawson when they failed run containment a few times.

The only thing you might be able to do to counter is a bull rush but I don’t think any of our D-Line has that move. The two guys that could bull rush Phillips and Lawson are not on the team anymore. Maybe they can sign a player who isn't a complete package but has some bulk and power?

Epenesa was only noticeable on his boneheaded offside. The refs were atrocious, but a lack of heart and discipline cost them the game, not officiating. Epenesa and Edmunds would look much better if Oliver and J. Philips were lining the middle with Hughes screaming off the edge. That’s what all 3 of those guys were bred to do. We need a MLB who can play fast and have the right instincts super quick. So the safeties are creeping up and shadowing to make up for it. McD’s Defense was absolutely made for a DL of guys like Hughes, J.Philips, and Oliver. With safety’s backing up a few system CBS (Tre excluded). But we don’t have those guys and Edmunds is the exponent on the problem. In this scheme very strong MLB play can keep the safeties back and force the offense to honor the DL. 1

He may be able to get a few hurries, but he isn’t physical enough to take on double teams. Gets pancaked often. Aaron Donald is the only small dude that can take on the world.
Maybe Someday Posted October 14, 2020 Posted October 14, 2020 We do miss his pass rush but he wanted a lot of money for a DT that didn't care about stopping the run too much.
Over 29 years of fanhood Posted October 14, 2020 Posted October 14, 2020 This thread is dumb. Bills got beat on the edges not up the middle. They collapsed the pocket a lot but no body contained outside. you might say Shaw Lawson was missed or Lorax, but not JP, he wouldn’t have changed a thing 1

We were spoiled with amazing talent like Bruce Smith. I’d run through a wall right now if we had someone of his talents on this D.
Aussie Joe Posted October 14, 2020 Posted October 14, 2020 There are going to be some good football players that pass through fleetingly on this team and go on to get paid big money at other teams.. I can accept that

Aussie Joe Posted October 14, 2020 Posted October 14, 2020 Makes me wonder why Star agreed to take a pay cut in the pre Covid days considering he is the best player on the D? 1

Star gets most of his hate because of his contract. We definitely miss him and Phillips, those two could at least soak multiple blockers and free our ends up. There's not an OL in the league that's worried about our D-Line.

He was basically useless rushing the passer we're allowing the same yards per carry we did last year despite milano missing over half the snaps so far and edmunds playing like crap. We also held Henry to his lowest ypc since week 6 of last season and Jacobs to the lowest ypc of his career. 1

Phillips was below average against the run, and a few flash plays against the pass but not much impact otherwise. The guy has two sacks and one QB hit this year. In five games, that's not a lot of hits.. That's the way he was with us too. Few hits and pressure, converting the ones he did have at a higher than normal rate into sacks. So he had a huge effect on the plays he got sacks (obviously) but didn't effect many other plays at all. That's not what you pay big money for. Edited October 14, 2020 by Thurman#1

In this scheme very strong MLB play can keep the safeties back and force the offense to honor the DL. He hasn't been screaming off the edge for the last couple of years. He looks so slow and is pulling some Murphy type moves to end up out of position. There were a few times today where he 3ys ago he makes a tackle in the backfield, and now he barely sees the guy. Losing Shaq for Murphy type money was the worst decision they've made so far. 1 hour ago, QCity said: Star gets most of his hate because of his contract. If you go back and watch you will see teams running up the middle with ease in multiple games.

They did run on us last year as well. "Us." Meaning the team. What Star did was his job, very well. You can't expect him to pressure the QB. He can't. And you also can't expect him to affect plays in which he isn't in. He, and all the DLs, platoon, generally playing between 40 - 60% of the snaps. Blaming (or praising) any one player for our success/failure against the run overall doesn't make much sense, especially as the Bills themselves seem to be saying that a lot of the problem has been run fits. But as for eating double teams and space, Star did it very well, though there definitely were a few bad plays as well. Not that many, though.
