4merper4mer Posted October 13, 2020 Posted October 13, 2020 (edited) I do not believe ghosts exist but, unlike aliens, they cannot be disproven. I should clarify that I don't believe ghosts can be seen/detected by humans, which is technically different than existence in general. I have no opinion either way on existence. So......there is no “sitcom math” for ghosts? You have yet to show your work on that math, but that’s another topic entirely. Back to ghosts.....Casper was cool, but I had a little thing for Wendy the little blonde witch in her red cape. I think she grew up to be Samantha, but I can’t confirm that. Quote
JohnC Posted October 13, 2020 Posted October 13, 2020 The Gettysburg battlefield is reported to have many sightings. I have a good friend who is involved with the battlefield as a volunteer tell me that he has had an interaction with a ghost at the copse of trees. He is a stand up guy I have known for a long time and is not the type to create stories. https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=ghosts+gettysburg+&view=detail&mid=0B5339EDCE02045B33680B5339EDCE02045B3368&FORM=VIRE 1 Quote
CLTbills Posted October 13, 2020 Posted October 13, 2020 Personally, no, although I wish I had. I have an Great Aunt and Uncle back home in NY (my dad’s aunt and uncle), who live in a house, that is supposedly inhabited by spirits. Basically anybody that’s ever spent the night in that house claims to have seen them, including my Dad himself, and his cousins (my 2nd cousins) Kevin and Jacquie. My Aunt and Uncle still see them to this day and are so immune to it, it’s no big deal. My Aunt has actually told me that they’ve lived with them for so long (40-plus years) that they actually make her feel comfortable, like they are protecting her. It’s a man and a woman that they see, always the same. Years ago, they did a bunch of research on the house and found some previous owners of the house, with late 1800’s through early 1900’s photos - and apparently that’s who they see. They know their names and everything. Supposedly the ghosts interact with them, or at least acknowledge that they are there. When they put in their in-ground pool in the early 90’s, apparently that REALLY stirred things up. And I know this sounds weird after that damn story, but these particular family members are not the “eclectic” type... just normal people. Definitely not the kind of people that you take what they say with a grain of salt. And there have been so many stories within the family about family members that have seen them, again, including my Dad, that I absolutely have to believe that it’s true, although again, I haven’t seen it with my own eyes. Not at the table Karlos Posted October 13, 2020 Posted October 13, 2020 One of our rental properties were pretty sure is haunted. It was built in the 1800s and was a bar with rooms or apartments above and behind, two very large attics, Large basement and parts of it are sealed off. Opened a hole in one part and there was two shoes sticking out of a large pile of dirt(never figured out why. Relative is a police officer he’s creeped out by it but didn’t think there’s a reason to investigate further) Multiple Tenants(4 unit apt building) would report weird things and noises pretty often. Small hand prints would sometimes appear on the bathroom mirror, window or wall after a shower in the lower rear apt. Never in the same place twice. You’ll hear someone run by from time to time and youre the only person in the house. Sounds like people preparing thanksgiving dinner in kitchen of the front upper apt(assuming it’s the house settling and stuff rattles). One tenant said they saw a lady standing over the sink another said a small child ran into a bedroom. Motion detectors in the hallways and on stairs go off a lot at night. Cameras show no movement. Had a guy stop as he was riding by when I was outside painting and ask if I lived here. He said his ex used to live here and he would never set foot in the house again. Brought up a sound proof room in one of the attics, shook his head, said good luck and left. Guests of tenants rarely stayed the entire night. There’s a few other things as well. I love that house but a lot of bad luck and weird things happen there 1 Quote
Figster Posted October 13, 2020 Posted October 13, 2020 I'm not sure If it was a ghost. My nephew and I while metal detecting my late granfathers property both seen what I would describe as a distortion of space on my grandfathers front porch. It looked like heat waves coming off of hot pavement in the shape of a person. It happened in the day time. When it happened I asked my nephew did you see that? He said an invisible man was on the porch looking at us. I said invisible, how do you mean. He said the air was wiggling around like a bunch of worms. He was only 10. I think its note worthy to know my late grandfather would never have let us dig holes in his yard looking for lost treasure. I'm just saying... 1 Quote
UConn James Posted October 13, 2020 Posted October 13, 2020 In String Theory physics, they theorize that there are 11 dimensions. And some think that there could be many more than 11. As you get up in number, there are dimensions that operate independently from space and time. Could it be a shadow of one of these dimensions or the multiverse or traces of / leftover electromagnetic energy? These are things to think about at 3 a.m. instead of sleeping. 3 1 Quote
BritBill Posted October 13, 2020 Posted October 13, 2020 I live in a city which is arguably the most haunted in the world - https://www.nationalgeographic.com/travel/intelligent-travel/2008/10/30/york_england_most_haunted_city/ The history in the city is so deep it opens itself up to haunting stories. I personally have only seen one thing which I can't explain. A friend and I were walking home from the local pub late one night (I know, I know). Part of the journey takes us through the original and old part of the village we lived in. A lovely green space with trees which has the village church which was built from the left over stone of York Minster (https://yorkminster.org/). As we approached a road which ran left to right in front of us we both saw a white object, around waist height float by at human running speed and head over the greens towards the church. We saw this from about 60 ft away. We looked at each other and ran towards the direction it travelled towards but lost sight of it. I'd say the thing was the size of a regular trash can in height and width but it had no obvious features like body parts. It wasn't glowing or partly transparent either. Almost like a fat golden retriever on its hind legs but you couldn't see any legs or face. We had a good look around the greens and the churchyard but didn't see anything again. Now if I'd have been on my own I'd have just put it down to drink, the location, trick of the light and my imagination. For us both to see the same thing and recognise its path at the same time leads me to believe it was something unexplained which wanted to be seen. And no, it wasn't a fat golden retriever running on its hind legs. Quote

I suspect if I spent a week in the house, I would see no ghosts whatsoever. I have heard these sorts of stories before, and find them interesting. I genuinely believe your great aunt and uncle (and dad, etc.) think they have seen ghosts in the house. So that makes these types of stories really interesting to me. I have a colleague at work who is the nicest, most down to earth guy from Iowa! Intelligent, reasonable...he insists a former house he and his wife owned was somehow "inhabited" and has told me stories of very specific things that happened in the house for which there is no explanation. One time he and his wife left the house, with only the dog at home. They came home, opened a closet door to hang up their coats, and noted that all the shoes and stuff on the floor of the closet were arranged in a very specific circular pattern that the dog could not have done himself. He swears this happened and offers no real explanation for it. There were other similar stories. I find this stuff fascinating because I'm pretty sure there weren't any ghosts re-arranging shoes in the closet, but I don't think my colleague made this up to get a rise out of people, etc. So then, what's going on? There's the rub. Quote
707BillsFan Posted October 14, 2020 Posted October 14, 2020 (edited) No (but maybe...see below), but I have lived in a "haunted" house. We had many experiences in a family rental when we moved back to our home town for jobs after college. We didn't tell anyone about any of them. After we moved out, my FIL approached us one day. He asked us if we had experienced anything while living there, because the current tenant was having serious issues w/ something "paranormal." The hair on my arms stood up after he asked us that. Our experiences were mild compared to the couple who moved in after us. They had doorknobs turn on their own...an old fashion, pedal sewing machine, start pedaling on its own to name a couple things. We now own the house and rent it out. There has been no further mention of anything paranormal. One of my daughters will be moving into the house soon, I'm sure I'll hear something if there is.... A couple weeks back, I spent a week in Reno for a golf trip. I stayed at one of the large casino/hotels downtown. I had a water bottle get batted off the dresser at some point during the night. It wasn't anywhere near the edge or near anything that could have caused it to end up across the room. Then while sitting, enjoying a cup of coffee one morning, I was startled by a loud noise coming from the closet. 4 or 5 of the wooden hangers were pushed to the center of the closet and were still swinging. A handful remained in their original place and were still. That kind of freaked me out. I also had some bizarre death dreams during that stay that freaked me the F out. Weirdly enough, there was some graffiti on the nightstand, RIP to some guy written in a few spots. Coincidence? I have no idea, but there was something going on in that room. I also hike at this certain park regularly. On two occasions I had some weird experiences. One day, I saw someone walking toward me. Clear as day someone was there. Frustrated, I looked down to grab my mask, to put on. When I looked up, nobody was there. There was nowhere for anyone to go. I walked around that area for a good couple of minutes, looking for that individual. Nope...nobody around. On another day, I started walking down the main trail. I saw a large dark, black "mass" hovering ahead. It just hovered, then vanished. I walked ahead and nobody was walking ahead of me. Later I looked up "haunted" areas of our county and noticed park was on the list. Could I have seen a couple of different "ghosts," I have no idea. I've also had some other experiences during my life. While I haven't seen anything "per se," I have had a few things happen around me to say there is something going on that I can't explain. aristocrat Posted October 14, 2020 Posted October 14, 2020 my dad was drinking at the bloody bucket in lewiston when a guy walked to the end of the bar in strange older clothes. they didnt hear him come in and it was just my dad and the bartender. bartender starts walking over to him when the guy turns around and walks out and walks straight through all the tables and door. there have been tons of sightings there apparently. my cousin worked at an old hotel in the falls and she said her chair would get moved often along with other things. i think it was hotel niagara. Gugny Posted October 14, 2020 Posted October 14, 2020 I have never seen a ghost. My sister and my dad have both seen ghosts in my parents' house, which is the house I grew up in. My brother, mother and I have never seen one. My sister saw our deceased great Aunt Elaine. She also saw a little girl. My dad did not see anything clearly, but saw someone walk from my old bedroom into my parents' current bedroom. He thought it was my mom, but soon realized that she was in the kitchen. My mother and I have both felt someone gently sitting down in at the foot our beds when no one is there. I never felt anything like that in their house, but I have in the house I live in now. We both think it's my father's mother from Heaven. 1 Quote
Ridgewaycynic2013 Posted October 14, 2020 Posted October 14, 2020 A grandchild of a friend awoke from a nap in my living room, whimpering that a lady watching her caused her to awake. As it is the room where Bride the First passed away under hospice care, I have always wondered. 'Second sight' was said to have been in that family. Quote

The foot of the bed comment struck a chord, however. I had this crazy dream! In it I was lying in bed and a stream of black something (smoke?) was circling above me. I was panicking and trying to touch it with my hands or feet, thrashing all over the bed like crazy. It FREAKED my wife out. She didn’t know what to do but was afraid to wake me. In the dream a scene kept playing out before me with some old man unable to speak, but replaying this scene over and over. It involved our deceased son, and was a charade style explanation of what happened to him. (Way too complicated for here, but it made so much sense!) I’m freaking in my sleep, and the old man keeps trying to calm me. First with a reliving of my sister getting in the shower on a cold dark winter morning in WNY when I had to be at the bus by 6:30 am in HS. It was added as an element of the charade story. As long as she had the water running, I was calm and at peace. I didn’t have to venture out of my warm bed into single digits waiting for the bus alone in the dark. When my panic ramped back up I felt a right hand on my left foot as though at the foot of my bed, calming as they will often do before or after a massage. In a strange way I can still feel that. I finally calmed to the point where I could ask “what is your name?” just as I woke up. I was “awake” when I heard “that was a Bill”. The words were not in order, they all came at once, like a stamp. Strange, but I’ll say maybe at the semi end of the dream. OK, now I’m fully awake and trying to explain to my wife. It was JUST A DREAM. Dreams can be crazy! They can seem so real, so the dream didn’t freak me out too bad. What happened next did. My wife goes off to get ready and I lay alone in bed for about 30 minutes. During that half hour I have about 20 “warm shivers”. I can’t explain it, but they were awesome! Imagine 20 orgasms in 30 minutes. Sorry, but that’s what it was like! I have no explanation for that half hour, but I wish it had never ended. It could very well have been some sort of adrenaline rush overflow. It was amazing! I spoke with our son’s therapist (CNN calls her for interviews, her book has turned into a movie deal, she’s friggin’ amazing!) and she calmly said “that’s the energy leaving the body after a visitation dream”. Whatever it was, feel free to sign me up again! A few months later I was at my sister’s in Wisconsin for the Green Bay game. I asked our family historian to pull out old photos of our Uncle Bill, the only aunt or uncle we had. We only knew him when we were very little, but he looked very familiar. Again, it was just a dream, one of millions, but the next part was a once in a lifetime thing. . Edited October 14, 2020 by Augie Quote
