Kwai San Posted October 5, 2020 Posted October 5, 2020 Looks like this is being discussed now......agree on the short kick tho. Shoulda boomed it.
Seoulofstone Posted October 5, 2020 Posted October 5, 2020 (edited) The trouble with people nowadays is that they always look for the sure thing. The closest you can get to a sure thing for a kicker is Justin Tucker and he's a unicorn. What makes you think Haushcka or anyone else would definitely have made it? The most successful kicker last year (in point terms) was Butker. Just two weeks ago he kicked two vital 58ish yarders. Last week he sucked-i know because he cost me in fantasy. It happens. Daniel Carlson was appalling when he came into the league. He was cut by a couple of teams but yesterday he made 2 excellent 50+ long distance shots against the Bills. The bottom line is Bass hasn't cost us a game yet. I can't get on board with the Bass angst. Thank goodness McD has proven with Josh that he isn't as reactionary in his judgement of players, and cuts out the outside noise. Edited October 5, 2020 by Seoulofstone 2 1
Apocalypse Nuts Posted October 5, 2020 Posted October 5, 2020 I talked about that but it was mainly to myself. So that doesn't really count I guess. However, I don't recall seeing too many plays in all my years where a kicker was able to immediately redeem himself, and then some, in that fashion. That's how you get over a mistake. And it was a pretty decent tackle for a kicker, IMO. Others may have indeed talked about this but I'm glad the OP brought it up again.
badassgixxer05 Posted October 5, 2020 Posted October 5, 2020 Bass looked like he wanted some contact on that tackle. Most kickers just kinda fall down at the legs of the return man and try to trip him up. Bass went right at him and made the tackle, then stood up flexing a bit after. lol Thats the way to get a miss off of your chest. 2

We are a Super Bowl contender with a Rookie kicker who hasn't proven he can make it in the NFL yet and his body of work thus far gives us every reason to be concerned. I hate rookie kickers in the NFL. What is the point? At least look at players that have shown they can be successful in the league first and also don't further marry yourself to a freaking kicker by using a draft pick on him. I REALLY hope he turns it around, Hauschka wasn't perfect by any stretch but he proved himself in the league and if it wasn't for his performance in the playoff game against Houston we would have never been able to B word about two players colliding with Watson at 20 MPH and him not moving an inch.

He’s got to shake it off and be fully ready for the next one. Yep. I gave him immediate props, BUT I had given him a second bad grade for his short kickoff... unless it was planned and only the guys know. Missed extra point, short kickoff....then great tackle. All is forgiven... but not forgotten. He makes every kick an adventure. 1

In real terms so far Bass hasn't affected Buffalo's superbowl chances. Does he inspire confidence? Not particularly. Yet. But let's not pretend as though metronomic kickers were readily available. Op mentions Gonzalez who had a really bad year 3 years ago I think when he was at Tampa. Cost them lots of close games. The only exception is Zuerlein who has been really good, but he is getting older and he chose Dallas (more fool him).

Again, not like Hauschka is gold by any stretch, but he's shown he can get it done in the league at a high level. I should also add that I very much appreciated the missed PAT and the last second TD. I took the Raiders +7.5 live betting after Allen appeared to be injured. So that miss and the subsequent back door was fine by my account. Edited October 5, 2020 by KzooMike
Seoulofstone Posted October 5, 2020 Posted October 5, 2020 (edited) I would. And I get the concern- I really do Haushcka hit in the low 70s percentage rate on FGs last year and they wouldn't attempt long kicks. Gostkowski was a multiple SB winning PK who missed 3 FGs and an extra point in week 1 for the Titans. Last week he hit 5 including 3 from over 50. Bass missed 2 (arguably) in his first game and an extra point on a bad hold this week. Not close to Roberto Agiayo bad. YoungHoe Koo is having a great season in ATL after a disasterous start at LAC. We need a bigger sample size. I hope that he gets a few longer shots soon though because he needs to gain confidence for himself and fans. No question. Edited October 5, 2020 by Seoulofstone

Make it and it's a 2 possession game. I agree. With this offense, I think we should go for 2 after every td in the first 3 quarters and based on situation in the 4th

I’ll hand it to the coaching staff for showing continued trust in the kid, but missing an extra point on a game played in a dome with no significant pressure or crowd to deal with is pretty troubling. But...with that said, I noticed him talking to the holder after the miss, and the replay clearly showed the laces were toward the kicker. I’m not sure if that impacted the strike of the ball, or just messed with the kicker’s head. In either event they need to get this fixed. We have yet to see if this kid can even kick a long fg (45+)?? Hopefully he fixes this obvious "right drift" on his kicks. Or start aiming at the left post? The tackle was clutch.
BigBuff423 Posted October 5, 2020 Posted October 5, 2020 Nobody wants to give Rookies a chance to develop and mature into NFL ready players, until a year or two later they're playing great for a different NFL team. Then, those same people were, "Our GM sucks for cutting this kid! Nobody gave him a chance!". Patience is a virtue. Josh Allen wouldn't be where he is today if the coaches weren't patient and coaching him. Bass needs to be given the opportunity to learn and grow through it. 1
BUFFALOKIE Posted October 5, 2020 Posted October 5, 2020 I'd like to rewatch Mr. Bass' tackle, but all I get is fishing videos. Can someone please post a link? SRSLY. 1
DrDawkinstein Posted October 5, 2020 Posted October 5, 2020 Big tackle on that kick off, and that started the sequence of events that lead to Norman's punch-out, which ignited the Defense (and whole team). Stuff happens. Bass is a rookie. I'm ready to ride with him now and into the future. Let the kid develop. We should know better by now.
CarolinaBillsFan Posted October 5, 2020 Posted October 5, 2020 There was also an illegal block in the back on the kickoff, so although I agree it was a great tackle by the Kicker, it would not have mattered.

There was an early kickoff (after the first TD?) where Bass kicked it short of the end zone and their returner got crushed at the 15. So... 🤷🏻♂️ that may have been planned; who knows. But... in this league, you give guys chances and eventually they’ll burn you. Much safer to kick it through.
Franco_92 Posted October 5, 2020 Posted October 5, 2020 Pat McAfee says that nowadays kicks happen so fast that the onus of laces being out actually falls on the long snappers, who can rotate the ball incredibly precisely. If true, laces were Reid's fault.
Orlando Buffalo Posted October 5, 2020 Posted October 5, 2020 I actually think McDermott made a mistake kicking the XP there. If I am playing the odds I think the chance to make it a two score game should have been worth the gamble.
