I think he knew it came loose.  I suspect he couldn't tell if it ever hit the ground, or not

If you catch it in the end zone with two feet on the ground, and then fall down outside of the end zone, it's 100% a touchdown and has been for the history of the NFL.

I've seen that called before. It sounds bull####, but the explanation goes that even if the wr has control of the ball with it breaking the plane, the ball has to break the plane after the completion of the catch.

 

But Brown had two feet and a knee down with the ball breaking the goal line. That was clearly a TD.
