Favorite story about Gibson:

His catcher, Tim McCarver goes to the mound to talk to him.

Gibson told him to go back to the plate but said:

"The only thing you know about pitching is that you can't hit it."

Seaver, Brock and now Gibson. RIP to another all-time great.

Gibson was fierce, in the Don Drysdale way. A quick google search uncovered this gem about Gibson throwing at a batter in spring training and Seaver retaliating in season. Nowadays when a pitcher throws close the batter gets all pissy and MLB intervenes with a suspension

1968.

1.12 ERA resulting in mound change.

13 shutouts.

When you are so good that they change the field dimensions  because of you, you are noteworthy.

When I played softball, I had a pitcher friend that said Gibson was once asked by a reporter, what he would rather do, pitch a no-hitter or a shutout. Gibson replied "a shutout, you can't lose a shutout."

Little known fact.

That was year of the moving mound. When he pitched the distance was

50' 6".

That would make him really old.

The mound was at 50'. Changed in 1893.

After Gibsons 1.12 ERA in '68, it was changed from 15" high to 10".

Gibson once knocked down Reggie Jackson in an old timers game.

I meant it to be humoris. Most hitters thought it felt like 50.6.

I remember the height change.

You being Canadian I was about to ask if you were getting your sports mixed up.   There were a couple of guys in Ontario Prov. that could throw 100 mph from 46 feet in the fastpitch leagues in the 60's and 70's.

The King and his court...4 guys playing exhibition games against full teams...he pitched from second base...incredible skill, loved the suds.

Eddie Feigner. I saw the King and his court in the early 90's.
