It doesn't matter how many feet you get down if you don't control the ball through the ground. At least that's what they've been telling us for the last five years and that's the way they've called it until now.

This note is in the 2020 rulebook.  I do not know why they called it a catch:

 

(1) It is a catch, or an interception, if, in the process of attempting to possess the ball, a player secures control of the ball prior to it touching the ground, and that control is maintained during and after the ball has touched the ground.
