It’s probably not necessary but it’s beneficial for fringe roster guys to get reps during a game. The players who have roster spots locked up may not care.

if the NFL took a winter break like most sports leagues around the world they could easily have a 20 game season.

remove pre season entirely and add 4 regular season games. take the winter break around Christmas and return for January-Feb. Superbowl in April

Yeah, that’s a wonderful idea. 😒

uh no.

Eliminate 4 PS games.  Add 2 regular games and follow the normal PS schedule as is.

The NFL had a lot of change forced on them this year, and some of it might stick. I like the expanded PS with protected players and liberal call ups. Preseason is definitely cut back going forward. (They won't eliminate it because it's extra $$$.)

I may be the only one but I enjoy preseason football, particularly the aspect of no names doing whatever they can to make a roster. It was a great warmup to real football. I also liked the Pro Bowl a week after the Super Bowl as a weaning mechanism.

I agree.

I think 2 would be enough.

Preseason games are very important for the bottom-third of a teams roster, guys fighting for backup and special teams roles, and for drafted rookies to get their feet wet.

The owners want 2 preseason and 18 regular.

Cook isn't Hopkins and David Johnson is not the same DJ of 2016.  You need that true #1. You'll see how much better we look on offense with Diggs in there.

Made me really question taking Watson in FF this year.

They needed a big play receiver there and they had a bunch of Jags and an RB that looked old except for one run

I agree with this.  There was a reason both teams ran the ball so much early last night.  They needed to get settled and both were a little sloppy especially early.  We were looking at the SB champ against another playoff team too.  Two preseason games would’ve made a difference.  Teams with new coaches/schemes and/or a lot of player turnover will not look that good.  The league doesn’t want a rookie OT getting a QB knocked out for a season because he couldn’t be worked in more slowly in the preseason.

It’s a straw man argument to say the teams need preseason games to select a roster. No they don’t! If they don’t play those games it doesn’t mean there will be less players in the league. The teams will simply make their decisions using other metrics. So? The same number of guys get cut. Just because some player happens to make a play in a glorified practice game is no guarantee he’s a better player day in and day out...and in fact every single year we see a Bills player perform as the preseason standout only to watch him get cut and never be heard from again. The preseason games prove nothing.

Absolutely no need for NFL preseason games. No need to risk injury for meaningless games.

As for fringe players, who cares about them. Preseason just makes them look better than they actually are. Preseason made Nate Peterman look like a capable QB and a rugby player like a capable RB. If a fringe player is good enough to make it they will show it in practice.

They might never admit it, but I think what coaches see in practice is more valued than preseason game performance. There are so many factors that  determine who makes a roster, and I’m not convinced that preseason games are a big one. What does a guys performance against a bunch of third stingers who will get cut in a week say ? You’re absolutely correct, every year we have these preseason heroes who don’t make the cut, while guys who did nothing make the team. I think college film and practice tells you more than what a player does in the disaster of a game called preseason football.

I'd say 1, and it can be a scrimmage type set up.  No need to have throwaway plays in exhibition, and you end up with a bunch in a true game format.
