GunnerBill Posted September 5, 2020 Posted September 5, 2020 I think this is the right call for two reasons. 1. I have never been a big Nick Foles guy and yes his Superbowl run was lightening in a bottle. He is a good backup QB and that is all. But also.... 2. If you go the other way and Foles sucks through 4 weeks it is really difficult to go back to Trubisky. If you do the moment he walks into that huddle every teammate is thinking "we are done". I don't think Trubisky is the long term answer. But he didn't totally suck even last season and I think they are right to stick with him until there really is no other option. 1
Doc Brown Posted September 5, 2020 Posted September 5, 2020 We'll see what the new OC Lazor can do for him as he's had a fairly good track record as a quarterbacks coach (which he essentially is pry what he'll be considering Nagy calls the plays). You spent all that draft capital for him (including on passing on Mahomes and Watson). You mine as well make sure he's not your franchise QB. If he doesn't work out you can always put Foles in after Thanksgiving and hope for a magical run deep into the playoffs.

Lazor's two OC stints have resulted in him being fired midway through his second season though... and that was with Dalton and Tannehill so not complete trash.... similar levels to what he inherits in Chicago.

He did a good job with quarterbacks though especially as QB coach. Foles threw 27 TD's and 2 INT's with him as his QB coach (albeit in Chip Kelly's offense). Dalton's two best seasons were with him as QB coach. Tannehill's best two years stat wise (before last year) came with him as the offensive coordinator. I'm not saying he's a QB guru but he could have a positive impact with Trubisky. Edited September 5, 2020 by Doc Brown

Yes, and I’ll add — if you don’t name Trubisky the starter he’s done. This is a #2 overall pick. I think the only way Foles could “win” this job would have been if Trubisky completely blew up in camp and that wasn’t likely to happen. Bringing Foles in was a kick-in-the-ass for Mitch, and a viable option if he gets hurt or regresses.
Niagara Bill Posted September 5, 2020 Posted September 5, 2020 This qb battle reminds me of the good old days of Flutie/Johnson. Or was that Johnson/Flutie. 1

jethro_tull Posted September 5, 2020 Posted September 5, 2020 the thought is that trubisky knows the offense, has a decent new TE for checkdowns (graham). GM ryan pace is still holding out hope for redemption and the defense is expected to be better than the '18 season with off season signings and injured key players at full strength.
Brennan Huff Posted September 5, 2020 Posted September 5, 2020 I read somewhere that Trubisky is legally blind in 13 states. Not sure how true it is however
C.Biscuit97 Posted September 5, 2020 Posted September 5, 2020 It’s the only decision they should have made. It’s absolutely idiotic how quickly teams give up on young QBs for scrub veteran (though Foles has been good on the Eagles but never for a full season). As much as I’m a (objective means being a critic here) critic of Allen, even if he is really bad this year, I’d sign a veteran / draft a guy to “push” him but he is winning the job next year too. that said, the leash is very short.

aristocrat Posted September 28, 2020 Posted September 28, 2020 still have zero idea how he got drafted over watson. imagine how good that bears team would have been

He had good size and a good arm, but nothing eye popping talent wise Josh had bad numbers at Wyoming, but he also had a freak skill set that was worth taking a chance on. I'm not sure what Trubisky showed to warrant taking him over Watson at a minimum, much less Mahomes

When the hype for Trubisky was all over sports media, no one paid any attention, or if they did, they mentioned it as an aside and continued to polish his knob.
