I threw out a lot of old wire and metal. Normally I would expect that stuff to be picked up by the scrappers but it doesn’t seem like scrappers are coming around anymore. Anybody notice the same in your neighborhood? Not really. This year I made a "FREE" sign using some cardboard and the metal stand from a contractor's signso it stands up and can be seen from both sides. I've gotten rid of a thirty year old vacuum cleaner, a patio umbrella and stand, a plastic swimming pool (the dog prefers swimming in a natural body of water), and the old medicine cabinet from my bathroom that we decided not to use at the camp this summer just by hauling them to the end of the driveway and sticking the free sign in the ground. My city used to have "clean up" days twice a year but people abused it by putting out huge amounts of trash and the scrappers (aka "woodchucks") got really annoying by scattering the stuff people put out looking for "valuable" stuff, so they no longer do that.

We have a neighborhood garage sale every year (83 houses in the neighborhood). Every year at about 5-6pm when everyone's garage sale is over and they've left the free stuff out, at least 2-3 1993 Dodge Caravans come through like it's Black Friday. 2

I’d have taken your free sign and left the rest. It would have saved me my weekly trip to Goodwill. My wife gets into purging moods. 1 1
Just Jack Posted August 26, 2020 Posted August 26, 2020 A couple years ago when the wife and I were moving from our rental house to the one we bought, we were putting furniture and other stuff out on the front yard. Everything would be gone within an hour of putting it out. One day while leaving my wife sees something on the neighbors screened in front porch. It's the umbrella from the patio set we put out. We figure they were the ones snagging everything since it was gone so quick. My garbage picking story. Years ago I had a storage unit. One day while leaving in the morning, I noticed a unit down the way from me with some stuff left outside of it. Driving by I notice the distinct color and shape of a Coleman stove. I think to myself "self, if that's still there when I come back tonight, I'm grabbing it." Well, when I did come back, it was still sitting there. Snagged it, score! A Coleman three burner stove, similar to the one here... https://www.coleman.com/all-camp-kitchen/camping-stoves/guide-series-powerhouse-414-stove/col_3000003655_pr/COL_3000003655 The only thing that appeared wrong with it, was the o-rings on the fuel rail. When you'd shut it off, it would still burn for a minute or two.

I left my house for less than 5 minutes and when I came back, a bike helmet and a couple other small things were gone - and a kid was riding the bike I was selling. I know if I was 5 minutes later, it would have been gone. I had $10 on the thing and the kid's mom asked if I'd take her last $6 for it, which I did. The end of the driveway thing is definitely real. Even if something has clear price tags on it. I knew someone whos neighbor had a washing machine ouside on his front lawn with a sign that said free, no one touched it so a few days later he put a sign on it for like $50 and it was gone overnight. Some people figure if its free, then its probably junk, but if your selling it that its probably worth some money and worth stealing..... 1

Irv Posted August 26, 2020 Author Posted August 26, 2020 Garbaged picked a box of Estes rockets, a large model airplane and large model boat several years back. Put them on E-bay and got $1200

LabattBlue Posted September 1, 2020 Posted September 1, 2020 Garbage pickers in my town have been limited when they changed to, "all garbage must go in the tote". This is every week, except for one pickup week per month, and even then you can only put out 3 items.
