When he first became coach, he went out to dinner with with Kelly, Thomas, Reed, Smith, Tasker, etc. to try to get a sense of where they thought the team had gone off the rails. 16 1 2
Don Otreply Posted August 14, 2020 Posted August 14, 2020 This is why we think highly of our HC and GM, they do their homework. No wonder this organization is light years a head of where we were in the past. Create a Plan and have plan B,C&D ready to be implemented. It sure is refreshing to have adults in the room running the show. Go Bills!! 9
DFT Posted August 14, 2020 Posted August 14, 2020 23 minutes ago, JohnNord said: Not sure how this is newsworthy Our coach and staff were humble enough to reach out to a perennial winner, HOF and SB winning head coach to talk through their opportunities. Why is that news-worthy? Because it’s a first for this organization. Here’s a coach who’s won where few have. Despite his clout and the right to be egotistical about what he’s done, he’s still hungry, driven and humble enough to ensure his areas of opportunity (experience) don’t go without effort to rectify. This is the first time I’ve seen a winning coach for the Bills make a move like this. Either ego (Ryan, Marrone, Gailey, Williams) or ineptitude (Jauron, Mularkey) has prevented it in the past. Closest I’ve seen (Lynn and Schwartz) was experience issues. This is very impressive to hear in my opinion. 6 1
CommonCents Posted August 14, 2020 Posted August 14, 2020 Just like when you saw Bills players dancing during Renegade, you realize the preparation and detail is much different. You want to compete with NE? You need to work like NE. McD understands process. Hopefully he gets a little better in game. 1

It tells me he doesn't have a large ego. He just wants to win. Marv Levy used to say something like, "It's amazing what you can get done when no one cares who gets the credit." Both Levy and McDermott are really smart coaches, and not coincidentally, neither has a big ego. 1 2 1

dollars 2 donuts Posted August 14, 2020 Posted August 14, 2020 (edited) I know it may be just me, but I have found it impossible to dislike Joe Gibbs over the years. Outstanding coach. Solid human being. Digs fast cars. If I find out he likes flats over drums and loves watching old clips from the Hilarious House of Frightenstein I might have to create an idol in his honor. Kudos to the coaching staff for reaching out to others who can add to the knowledge base. Preparation and flexibility will likely be more important this year than is typical, IMO

Right but it seems like this kind of thing is pretty common in the NFL. Josh Allen said that at his press conference he reached out to Drew Brees and Peyton Manning. I think Manning himself said that he consulted with a number of QB’s in the offseason. I just didn’t think reaching out to Joe Gibbs was that big of a story. Maybe it’s just me
