Why does the team withhold information seemingly for the fun of it? Withholding information for the sake of withholding information. Why do we have to learn from Adam Schefter that it's a 6-year deal running through 2025? Do they think no one cares about the details?

It's going to be 8-9 million per year.

Totally fair. But what is the downside? What is the negative consequence of extending him?

There's not much of a downside.

There's the "what if" scenarios. What if the team doesn't meet expectations this year? What if our suddenly cost conscious owners won't fire him and eat that cost? What if we could've been better with a different coach?

I don't see much of an upside to extending him with 2 years left either. I suppose if we win the SB maybe we locked him in at a lower price and saved $$

This coach took this team to the playoffs twice in three seasons after missing the playoffs for 17 straight seasons and he has the team positioned for sustained success the next 3 seasons with a QB on a rookie deal and a good drafting track record thus far. What more could you be waiting on?

Re Scott,

Its all about the PPG and stats.  Josh's stats suck

Premature move and too long an extension.

Would like to see them field a formidable offense and win ONE playoff game before handing out this kindve extension.... but the standards have been so low here McDermott is seen as untouchable.

I knew I could count on you

Maybe now he can afford something besides those shiny workout shirts.

The problem's been the TC hats he has to fork over serious coin for--they don't grow brims like that on trees.

Well, I can tell you at least some players have already taken to instagram to congratulate McDermott.  That means something. Probably means more than the risk the Pegulas suddenly become worried about firing a head coach (which hasn't been the case to date).

I guess I'm a pessimist, but I'm not happy with this decision.

I think he's a fairly average coach. The 2017 Bills were a very mediocre team that finished 9-7 and made the playoffs only through the grace of god. The 2019 Bills were a bit better, but finished 10-6 with an insanely easy schedule.

The team is trending in the right direction, but if we don't take that next step I think we'll regret this decision.

here’s the thing though: I agree that McDermott is a BIT overrated by many posters on here.

But, do we really want to switch horses at this point?  The chances that we find a head coach like Rex Ryan (or even worse) far outweigh the chances that we find the next Andy Reid / Bill Belichick.

Sometimes you’ve gotta dance with who brought ya.

Nice.  So much for all the hand-wringing after that supposed meeting.

Now work on Beane.

What’s the rush?  When’s the last time there was a bidding war for a GM?  If the offense is much improved and Allen takes a step forward, he will get a new deal.  If Allen doesn’t, that’s about as big of a miss as you can have and it would make me question if he’s the guy going forward.

I also would have waited on McDermott but I have slowly come around on him being a good coach.  He’s one of the best defensive coaches in the game but still has had some big mistakes (so far, bad offenses/ OC, Peterman, coaching challenges).  But he is a really good man who players seem to love and he is the leader of the franchise.  Even if Allen doesn’t make it, I am fine with him getting a shot with another qb.

this year needs to happen because it will be the best possible test to see where this franchise is.  No more excuses.

The most no-brainer move of the year.  Dude took a team that other people thought were tanking because they shipped off their talent that didn't fit their vision in year 1 and they still make the playoffs.  Then after a little setback in year 2 with a rookie QB, we basically go wire to wire in a wildcard spot and make it again...

This team is going places with McDermott and hopefully Beane together for a long long time...

2 years left on a HC contract is a pretty standard time for an extension when the coach has been successful.  McD has cleared that bar.  No word on guarantees so all six years are unlikely to be fully guaranteed at this time for anyone worrying about risk.  It was a new contract that (assuming a typical structure) was prudent by the team and well earned by the coach.  Hooray for success and stability.   Now let’s take the next step (or two) forward.

For the first time in a long time, I believe our coach gets more out of our players than most other coaches would...

Aren't all coach contracts fully guaranteed?

Do you honestly think there was going to be a bidding war on McDermott?  Like what if they completely suck this year against a much harder (on paper) schedule?  And even if they were doing great, do you think he won’t sign an extension in the middle of season?

and I’m fine with it but I get it if someone did think it was earlier.

All years on all coaching contracts are guaranteed. No?

They are separate from the Cap, and paid like any internal employee.
