Sorry to see him go, but understand it for cost cutting.  It’s why I don’t think people who keep advocating to pick up this person or that person don’t seem to understand the prep for a tough off season from 2020-2021.  We need to save as many $ for current players we’re trying to keep.  I know many understand this point, but we need to keep our own.  We’ll prevail if we do.

Long got picked up before he hit the floor

Which made it even more surprising they didn't  keep him for a few more days to get a draft choice for him.

Likely because Winters was hot and they had no one else they wanted to release at this time.

There must be 10 guys out of the 80 that they already know will not make the team.

Who are needed for practice.  Let’s not pretend Beane doesn’t know how to work the system or somehow “screwed up” not holding onto Long to get a draft pick.

Not shocking he found a landing spot, Oline play in the league is hard to come by. He should be able to hang around the league for a few more years.

I think Long is a high level backup / replacement level starter. He isn't ever going to lose you a game single handed. Offensive lineman in that mold are very much in short supply league wide. Wouldn't shock me if he ended up starting for San Fran.

This.  I have no doubt he shopped-him-around and found no takers.

Long is a valuable piece though. There are guys much further down the roster that could have been cut instead of Long.

I think it’s a salary issue.  Plus we don’t know what type of shape he reported at.  There could be a lot of factors

His salary was negligible.  I still say that when he saw Winters get signed, ostensibly to be the starter at RG, he got pissed and asked to be traded or released.

Definitely.  Basically I was saying that when they signed Winters to start, Long wanted out one way or another.

Not sure if it's been stated, but IIRC, they've had Ike Boattger taking snaps at center during practices since his draft. He might be something of a sleeper candidate for the O-line. If I recall, his stock was really high his Jr year (projected 2nd round, I think?), and fell due to injury his senior year. If they see him as having the potential for backing up Morse, they could have seen his value as greater than Long's. I don't believe Long delivered a single snap at center last season, even though he was listed as Morse's backup. And if, as the season progresses, they don't think Boattger is effectively filling that role, Feliciano comes back eventually.

You know your team is built when you are getting rid of quality/serviceable depth.

Hell yeah. The Bills drop a reserve O-lineman and he immediately gets snatched up by a Super Bowl participant.

It is crazy that some people will not have any decision questioned. I am pro the regime. But they haven't got everything right and will not get everything right in future. It is reasonable still to debate the moves they make.
