Public unions seem to be in the bribery business in that they negotiate contracts with the same people they can vote for. They have gone so far as to hold school children hostage to further their own personal political goals. Look at the example that the 35,000 strong UTLA has given us. They have aligned themselves with BLM goals and are threatening to not open up schools without such things as a moratorium to be placed on charter schools, defunding the police and removal of all cops from the schools. The link below tells the story of the LA school taking hostage but the reason for this thread is to discuss public unions in general.

YES.

From the Democrats thread.

Government unions are made for payoffs/graft.

From your first link:

Worse, in an infuriating but sadly typical twist, the Seattle City Council exempted all government employees from their new tax. That’s right: The supposedly benevolent socialist city officials who thrust this upon their constituents made sure to carve out a giant exception for their peers on the taxpayer dime.

According to OpenTheBooks.com, 601 city employees in Seattle earned $195,000 or more. Analysts found that “tree trimmers lopped off $160,604; the chief librarian made $197,704; electricians earned $271,070; electrical lineworkers made $307,387; and police officers earned up to $414,543.” The new payroll tax will not apply to any of these government employees or their peers otherwise drowning in taxpayer cash.

So, no, the city council’s new tax is most certainly not a “victory for working people.” It’s a tax imposed on working people by politicians who made sure to spare the government class from sharing any of the burden.

Yes, this and your post re the LA teacher union triggered my long held thoughts about public unions thus the OP. Private unions are a different story. Although they don't thrill me, I view them on about the same level as peaceful protests. I might not like their message but believe they have every right to tell it.

The best things about unions these days is they feel completely free to show their batschittcrazy leftist side, which most Americans are increasingly tired of hearing.

People are struggling to keep their jobs right now. The prospect of having to keep one parent home to keep an eye on their third-grade student because teachers want to defund the police is simply a bridge too far for the average struggling family.

But that is what this boils down to. I look forward to the backlash.

Of course they are.  They are part of the self-perpetual, ever expanding, bureaucracy.

It’s legalized money laundering to those ends.  The politicians accept the money, to tax the people, to fund the unions, who pay the politicians, to tax the people, to fund the unions, who pay the politicians, to tax the people...

In bed? That is a kind way of saying Quid Pro Quo....

Let's be honest here, the public unions, including teachers and SEIU, are not only in bed with the Democrat Party, they are one of the major reasons our budgets are so high, AND that very Democrat Party even exists.

The only question you really should ask is why? And I'm glad you asked!

Because the Democrat Party is always pushing for more money for those unions, KNOWING they will then be rewarded for more money coming back into the Democrat coffers from that same union!

No employee should have the right to strike and have their job protected.  It's wrong to allow certain employees to shutdown or significantly impact a private or public organization for personal gain.

It's not a coincidence that 3 most powerful lobby groups in NY are all public sector unions.

Best thing Scott Walker ever did as governor of Wisconsin was to break their teacher's union.

Gee, you don't say.

Oh we've only seen the beginning.

Soon the marriage between teachers' unions and elected officials will bear its ugliest fruit: they're going to ram this online education horseshit through and pay the teachers as if they were actually working.

If ANY legislator in this country had any balls at all they would immediately propose that homeschoolers get the same per-pupil money that each school district gets.

I find it fascinating that people are just now waking up to this corruption. I’m in the private sector but my clients are all school districts. I’ve seen how this works for the last forty years! The Teacher’s Union pays for the campaign of three out of five School Board Members (they don’t care about the other two). Those three Board Members then sit at the negotiation table with Union and vote for anything the union wants. Every veteran Superintendent will tell you, that he/she only needs to know enough math to count to three! Keep the three board members happy and you keep your job! Teachers are white collar workers who work under the watchful eye of the taxpayer. They absolutely do not need a union!
