contracts are insured for career ending injury.

Can’t buy life insurance policies for dead cap hits, though.

This is super smart imo. Mahomes gets money NOW. KC saves cap latter.

When it comes to investing large sums time is the biggest factor for success. I'm not sure how they are allowed to structure the bonuses but what is the expected value of Mahomes bonus for the final year of his contract? Lets say the bonus is 10 mil for that final contract year, the expected value has to be at least 15 mil, and maybe 20 mil.

It's so rare to have a player you can offer this sort of deal to.

I think this is crazy and somewhat unnecessary for both sides, especially with the current level of uncertainty

If both sides have the mentality of winning first, it makes sense. Mahomes gets what, $400-500million..so not too shabby, Chiefs get 10-years to strategically add pieces around the best qb in the game, and will have a bargain during the second half of his contract allowing them to bring in some top free agents.  Sure Mahommes could sign two smaller length deals and end up with more cash, but how much money does he really need (don't forget endorsements outside of his paycheck)

Like someone already said, still will count against the cap and career ending is tough to prove.

He WAS.

That was before Sports effectively stopped and people stopped wanting to go with 75K of their favorite strangers in a stadium for 4 hours.  So how is ESPN doing financially lately?

QBs MIGHT be topping $75 million in 10 years or might be getting a fraction of that.

This concept that football will never drop in popularity is historically and hopelessly naive.

The risk of a 10 year deal is unbelievably risky right now.

Lol bro, if things turn out that people aren’t watching football and the NFL isn’t making money 5 years from now, a QB contract is going to be the last worry on an owners’ mind.

Wow!  Good thing the Bills passed on drafting THAT guy!

Think of all the money they just saved!!

Now Mahomes has enough money to buy the Sabres and keep the Pegulas afloat.

Things always work out.

Zero reason, really...more like $300 million reasons why or whatever % of the cap he will get.

The endless era of every year NFL players getting more every inexorably could end in a heartbeat.   The Sports Networks are financialy strapped right now and probably going to get worse, who in their right mind is going to want to shell out XYZ$ for a fooball ticket with 75K other people with COVID going around.

This and the fact the avg. career of an NFL QB is 4.4 yrs. Luckily it was "only" a dislocated knee cap he suffered.

Almost a half billion dollars to play football.

If you thought being around pee-wee football league parents whose kids are "definitely going all the way" was bad enough already...?

Will Andy Reid be coaching throughout this entire contract too?

He would be 74 or 75 when it's up.

It's from February, but it makes sense today, too:
