The asymptomatic spread of this virus is the most insidious aspect of it. It’s a rarity in that regard. And that’s precisely why we can’t get complacent with it.

Agreed. If the NFL is to start, they will likely institute testing daily or every other day in order to successfully quarantine everybody.

I do not think there will be a season.  Time to accept reality.  We are the laughing stock of the world with our covid numbers.

The lockdowns are NOTHING compared to what happens when there will be no meaningful sports to watch this fall and winter.

However, the players and their families are making the correct call.... no fans in stadiums, 14 day quarantines for NY, hot spots all over major NFL states... not the time to be casual about this. Stay safe, everyone!!! We'll see you in 2021.

I get that but it also means they may get sick. I agree it's a big risk for some of these 350 LB linemen

There isn't even proof that getting it means you can never get it again, there have been people who have had it twice now. It's not like chicken pox that you become immune if you have ever tested positive.

Then that would imply that a vaccine will not be protective either, if true. Unless vaccine produced anti bodies last longer than those produced in the body.

2-3 years is long enough to be considered a while?  This is McDermott's fourth year and he has turned over most of his staff, so still typically 2-3 years for most current Bills players and staff.

Absolutely.

Clemson may have the right idea, 37 of their players are already positive.  Get it now and be ready for September.

This is probably the smartest idea I have heard in a long time...the whole team should work to contract the virus now so they can win the super bowl when other teams players are out sick...it’s genius! ?

Or the virus mutates, like it's already been observed to do. And one virus doesn't stave off the new version.

Who has the final word on this?  NFLPA or the league/owners?

EDIT - I'll answer my own question.  The league has the say according to this tweet

To make a statement like this you need to cite the source or it's just more blah, blah, blah.

What source should he cite - they are still doing studies, but leading experts from several infectious disease and immunology departments have stated this.  People like Dr Fauci and others have talked about the very low level of antibodies seen in confirmed positive cases.  They also know that based on the other types of coronavirus (for example the version that causes the common cold) that AB production is very limited and vaccine production is nearly useless and people get infected year after year and sometimes multiple times in a year.

Even the CDC with its vaccine guidance is hoping for a vaccine on par with the flu vaccine that provides about 50% effective production in people and lasts for most of a flu season.

There are not any great studies - one way or the other - just initial studies that are not proving to be the impactful Ab production one would want - even in people directly infected.

We are being spoon fed to a final outcome, that we pretty much know is going to happen....

Maybe, but this information isn't any further sign of it. NFLPA was never going to risk infections on preseason games. They also know at this point they have zero bubble options or ways to truly prevent spread. Throw those ideas in the trash. No safe way exists to do this. Just like no safe way exists to play football and prevent CTE.  If they play they're doing so full well knowing that high rates of infections and disruptions will occur.

Yes, the NFL will be a total crap show this year, but the players and owners want a season more than the fans even do. Keep in mind what this money means to many of these players. Some only get a shot at that type of money for one year. Even for just one year it's life changing money. NFLPA and NFL will likely come to an agreement that allows for player opt out. If a player deems the risks to be too excessive they will have ______ option.  The NFL will likely require players to sign a waiver for liability. No fans will be allowed in the stadium. Rosters will change constantly. It will be horrific compared to any traditional season we have ever seen (if it even does finish) but by then people will want football so bad they will happily pay to watch what amounts to CFL rosters. In the end only a state or federal action will stop the season. It won't be the league.

On one hand, I absolutely hate preseason.  All the hype about guys like Jeff Tuel, Nate Peterman, D’Rick Rodgers when he doesn’t mean crap because it’s not comparable to regular season games.

but on the other hand, I feel bad for young players trying to make a team.  This sucks for them.
