"If the starting QB goes down, your season is basically over" is the dumbest/weakest football statement that can possibly be made.

Every team in the league's season is basically over if their starting QB goes down. I believe three teams in NFL history have won championships with backup QBs in the lineup. That's it.

Do you really think Joe Flacco is taking the Jets to a Lombardi Trophy?

Essentially, if the biggest hole on your roster, and the only one to which a fan of a rival team can reasonably point to, is BACKUP QB, then it means you have an extremely good roster.

Ya know what's a bigger impediment to winning football games? Not having any good pass rushers or cornerbacks. That's the position the Jets are in. All things considered, I'll take "mediocre backup QB situation" over "no pass rushers or cornerbacks" all day long.

Of course sadly we were on of the teams to lose to a backup QB. Yeah yeah Billicheck, defense, running the ball more etc.

Matt Barkley has 10 career TDs passes and 21 Interceptions and a 65 rating.

The OP is 100% correct.

The Bills didn’t do everything they could to improve backup QB. They maintained status quo by protecting Allen and keeping the competition bar on the floor.

I’m pretty surprised the Bills as a contender didn’t take out an insurance policy for Josh Allen. With Newton in the fold this division is going to be a dogfight and if Barkley/Fromm has to start meaningful games that could be the difference.

I know you guys love Beane/McDermott and they are doing a great job, but to me they made a mistake here.

Every team in the division has proven QBs behind their starter with the exception of the prohibitive favorite.

I would not call Darnold the rock of Gibraltar of starters.

Guess you missed the Saints and Bridgewater play after Brees went down.

Guess you missed the part where I said three teams in NFL history won a Lombardi with a backup QB in the lineup.

I agree, but right now there’s no reason not to have a solid backup.  There have never been this many good ones available.  Very few teams are likely to go on a tear with a backup the way New Orleans did, but a good team with a solid backup may go 2-2 whereas that same team may go 0-4 with Nate Peterman or Duck Hodges.

When I looked last night New England was the favorite with the sportsbooks-- if someone were to be right about Buffalo winning the AFCE they could cash in at 1.5-1.6x their wager amount. New England was down around -110.

I actually do agree with your thesis here and was hoping for an upgrade at backup QB with all that cap room we came into the off-season with. Before it got started I was hoping Ryan Fitzpatrick might somehow shake loose, then I wanted your boy Flacco! Or Jameis. I have a degree of trust in the Bills' FO and coaches but I must admit I am unable to arrive at the same conclusion independently pertaining to why are they so comfortable with Matt Barkley.

You're like Jimmy Spagnola Lite.  It's cute.  I like it.

Barkley can win games. His first start here was fantastic.

Remember 2013 when there was the Barkley, Nassib, Manuel, Glennon, Geno debate and which one would best fit Marrone's West Coast system.  What a waste of time.

Dude I agree 100% huge mistake. Most Bills fans like Barkley for some reason. The guy is a huge liability and would not have a job on any other roster.

You don’t like Barkley ?
The last game that he started still gives you nightmares?
