He checked-out even before that, (read: when he held out for a year to work on his crap album).  That's why I never wanted him.  It showed he doesn't love the game.

1st Round, No. 11 overall | Mekhi Becton, OT, Louisville

Instant grade:  B-plus

Analysis:  Of the top four offensive tackles, Becton was the largest at 6-foot-7, 364 pounds. He will have to refine his pass protection technique, but boy will he push around ends and linebackers in the run game at left tackle.

Yowsa !! 6'7'' 364 I guess he is a mountain!

So was Micheal Jasper, how did that work out?

The Jets drafted Mekhi Becton.  He's certainly in the running for the most massive offensive lineman in the league.  Otherwise, the Jets offensive line looks pretty ordinary both in terms of size and ability.  Becton has lots of potential as he is unusually athletic for such a big guy, but he's a rookie.  Rookie offensive linemen often take some time to develop.  Just ask Cody Ford.

There is a simple answer to your question, although it's easier to say than to do.

McDermott wants his team to be able to do what the Patriots try to do, and that is to be able to play any style.   They want to be able to run, to pass, and to be balanced.   They want to be able to stop the run, stop the pass, and stop balanced attacks.

McBeane's approach to roster building in order to play that way is to get guys who might be a little undersized against some teams, but to counter that with strength, toughness, and quickness.  I think, for example, that the Shaq Lawson/AJ Epenesa defensive end model is key to how McDermott wants to play.  Big enough to hold their ground if not to overpower anyone, and quick enough to still be able to defend wide and get pressure in the pass rush.   All-round players.  The Bills gave up a little more than 100 yards a game playing that way last season, and got really gashed in the run game only once, by the Eagles.

Yes, you say, but if the Jets come out pounding the ball on the ground, they're going to wear out the Bills defense and dominate late in the game.   Well, that's why McDermott's approach is to go eight deep on the defensive line.

I can't get too worried about your scenario.

Whats interesting is that the Bills played the Titans in week 5, 2019, with their ground and pound running attack and Henry had 20 rushes for 78 yards which held him to 3.9 yards per carry which was below his yearly 5.1 YPC average. Of course that was with Mariota at QB. The Bills out gained the Titans 313 to 252 that game too.

I'm more worried about the 49ers run game, this years Titans game, the Chiefs passing game and of course the hated Patriots 2x.

And I think his approach is to play the pass first. He drops in to coverage and leaves nowhere to throw the ball. Probably less run blitzing than other teams, I'd guess. That means the front seven has to be disciplined, stay in their lanes, and make tackles.

Personally, I'm fine if we remain decent against the run but elite against the pass. And as you mentioned, keeping the defensive line rotating and fresh will help.

Becton is a monster. He will help. Bell will shake off the rust from last year. The Jets are building big in the trenches. They will not be a pushover and automatic W. I think the Bills will handle them but they have to play a solid game. No dumb turnovers. No shanked punts, missed FG's, ill-timed penalties. Nothing from the past "Billsy" games like Cleveland last year.

Hmm, I think we can still beat them if we have all those things happen. The Jets are not a team you need to be mistake free to beat. It's the really good teams you need to worry about in that regard.

You can overcome some mistakes and still beat them.

Bell is still the same player.  The team around him isn't up to par.

The Jets really messed up letting Robbie Anderson get away.

Well, I think McDermott will say he wants to be great in all phases, but I agree that his philosophy was first to build a defense that stops the pass and to be good against the run.

McDermott never says it, but I think that he wants to be like Belichick in a lot of ways, including taking away the opponent's strength.   Saquon Barkley had a great opening drive, then the Bills shut him down.   As Nihilarian says, they pretty much shut down Henry.

If anything, the defensive line should be better this year (assuming Oliver is in the lineup), so I can't get too excited about the running game that any team puts on the field.  The bottom line is that McDermott wants to build a team that is really hard to beat, however you play against him, and if the past three years are evidence of a trend, he's building exactly that.

Jets were beating Bills in season opener until their Linebacker got hurt. The two teams are not that far apart. I like our specialists better on offense.

Are you a jets fan? Cause I hear them making this argument all the time.

Heres the reality. If a team gift wraps 4 turnovers (including a touchdown) for a team and does nothing on offense in the first half, losing a linebacker is not a valid excuse for winning. In fact, it really never is but definitely not in that context.

That was the low part of the Bills season, where they did everything possible to lose and still won. Conversely, having that lead was the high point of the Jets season and they still managed to lose.

In the rematch their starters struggled to beat the Bills backups 13-6 in a game the Bills treated like a glorified preseason game. If they can't beat the Jets especially at home then this team isn't as good as we thought. I realize divisional/rivalry games are usually hard fought and close but the Bills should still come away with a win in this upcoming opener.

The Jets O-line rebuild reminds me a lot of what the Bills did last off-season, it wasn't a lot of flashy big moves but it was a quantity effort. The two big starting caliber pieces acquired are McGovern who should anchor their center position and Becton their first round pick. Reminds me of the Bills making a big splash to sign Mitch and drafting Ford early. The Jets also made some smart lesser heralded moves like adding Van Rotten (Reminds me of the Feliciano and Spain) and Alex Lewis (Reminds me of the Spence Long addition solid depth) and another decent sized splash in Fant.

McGovern, Fant, Becton, and Van Rotten should all start for the Jets at an average or better level (Or at worst 1 or 2 are slightly below average.) Lewis should also provide some depth. I suspect the Jets will be on the market to add another depth piece or two in either late stage free agency or camp trades. As to the OP's worries, I wouldn't exactly call this group a bunch of maulers. I like McGovern as a good top 10 center and Becton could come in and anchor a tackle position at a good level. But this is an average O-line talent wise and one that will need time to gel. I wouldn't call last year's Bills O-line (a unit with 5 players who never played before) a world beating unit.

Even the Bills O-line last year was stacked with more depth and better front line talent than the Jets O-line as it currently stands. The Jets O-line won't likely be a top 10 O-line as chemistry alone would dictate that but they will be significantly improved. Still I wouldn't worry about how our D-line is going to hold up against them.

The Bills are the better team, but the Jets will be better than last year and they will play the Bills tough, as they typically do.

Their O-line will be improved. Becton and Fant are upgrades over their 2019 OTs, and this is what the article Nihilarian posted said about their FA Center acquisition:

Quote

Mired by inconsistent play in the pivot since the end of the Nick Mangold era (2016), the Jets finally have a legitimate answer at center. McGovern will replace Jonotthan Harrison, who was viewed by the organization as a placeholder after the Ryan Kalil debacle. Harrison likely will remain as a versatile backup. McGovern is durable (played every snap in 2019) and smart (no penalties last season). Durability is important, considering all the injuries to the line last season. This is GM Joe Douglas' biggest signing to date. A crafty center can do wonders for an offensive line. McGovern also can play guard. The Jets haven’t ruled that out; they will play the best five.

They had the #2 run defense last year, and despite being an Ahole, Williams is a good D coordinator.  Will be a couple of good match-ups, but the Bills should win both.

This is a good assessment. They will be a better unit this year, but they were very bad last year...

Bell is still good. He just signed with a Jets organization that believes that Adam Gase is the guy to get it done. As long as Gase is the guy the Jets have keeping an eye on the ball I'm not worried.

They did nothing to replace him, but I dont think anyone was super worried about Robby Anderson
