From will be a good back up, and you never know if the other two will make the practice squad. One observation is a lot of teams didn’t bundle picks because they would have more difficulty assessing UDFA so a lot of teams used all of their picks. I wouldn’t be surprised if the last two make the squad and they now have more players on the active roster at least for game day.

somnus00 Posted May 1, 2020 Posted May 1, 2020 I don't like our chances if Fromm has to play a few games for us this year. He may be good for the QB room. But I don't see him being good for the field on Sundays. Playing game manager for a crazy talented college program doesn't mean he has what it takes in the NFL. I wanted the Bills to take a QB in the draft. Just not Fromm. He's the kind of guy who becomes a successful coach after leaving the NFL. 1

Fair enough, but I don’t want to see Allen miss any games regardless. I’d rather see the unknown guy in Fromm start a game before seeing Barkley though. We know who Barkley is, and that’s a very bad NFL QB. Fromm might not project to greatness, but at least a rookie always offers a glimmer of hope. 2

IMO he's got a strong chance. And if he doesn't, could easily be a practice squad guy. Don't count any of them out. Beane has a history of trading guys for picks in August, and that means other guys get a shot that maybe they wouldn't have been expected to get. Cardale Jones, Reggie Ragland, AJ Mccarran, Russell Bodine and Wyatt Teller. Doing that, trading guys who have a shot, opens up spots for others. IMO it's possible all three make the roster, though the odds are against it. But I think two is very possible. Three picks and a crappy game at home, which ruined his sweet 2TD, no picks 117 QBR game from the year before which his best game as a pro. I'm not saying Beane wouldnt have picked Fromm anyway, the guy had to be jumping off the BPA board so late in the draft, but last offseason we were very comfortable with Bark. 1
folz Posted May 2, 2020 Posted May 2, 2020 (edited) 8 hours ago, CardinalScotts said: great they arent gonna make the team but nice words That's what I was thought/assumed going into the draft too, that most likely the guys in rounds 5-7 are going to have a really hard time making this roster. But after reading a lot about our picks and seeing their highlights, I actually think that most of them have a decent shot at making the squad. You don't waste a pick on a QB in the 5th round only to cut him in camp. They obviously liked the guy enough to pick him when they already have what they believe to be a franchise QB, so it was not a need. So if they liked the guy that much, you don't just throw him away. And I don't think he makes it past waivers if they try to put him on the practice squad. So I think they carry 3 QBs this year...unless Fromm were to somehow win the backup spot in his rookie year, in which case Barkley could get let go. But they are going to want to develop this kid and have him in the QB room. So many people have been high on Hodgins. And what our receiving corps really needs is height. Plus the guy catches everything. We don't have a true possession receiver, and that's what Hodgins is. The Bills will probably keep 6, possibly 7 WRs on the roster (6 may be more likely if you carry 3 QBs). Locks: Diggs, Brown, Beasley, Roberts (for return duties). So, two more spots. I don't feel real confident in Foster or Duke making the squad after last year. I think RayRay's time is done. So, that leaves McKenzie and the two rookies battling it out for the last two spots. McKenzie is basically a gadget player (jet sweeps, etc.). If the staff thinks they can get those plays out of Brown and Diggs in that role at times, the two tall rookies have a good shot at making the team. If they keep McKenzie for that role, then the two rooks battle it out. Dane Jackson has also received high praise. But, he has a much tougher hill to climb, but I'm not counting him out (due to his tackling ability). Let's say the Bills keep 5 CBs like last year. Locks: Tre, Levi, Taron. Also, I think Siran is a near lock. That leaves 1 spot for Norman, E.J., and the Rook (unless they were to keep 6). We're not sure what Norman has left or if he'll be resurgent in the defense he made his name in, we love E.J., but he has been cut by this staff before (and can he stay healthy?). So, it's a longer shot for Jackson (he'll probably wind up on the practice squad to start the season), but not out of the realm of possibility. The kicker, Bass, who knows. Hausch did have a bit of a slump early last season, so maybe the kid could beat him out, or maybe they keep a kickoff specialist. I don't feel like any of the picks are an Austin Proehl kind of pick, where everyone knew he didn't have a real shot at making the club. Edited May 2, 2020 by folz

I think its higher because even though the former dental student improved in the 2nd half last year, I believe he can’t be counted on at long distance anymore. I think its a straight up competition but I think McDermott wants Bass to win it.

His hands are incredible and had that length to contribute early.

I also think that with the expanded PS and promote-to-55 on game days they may choose to keep Bass on the PS as an ever present threat to Hauschka. 2

I just think the corner depth is not great. White, Wallace, Norman and Johnson are locks. Then maybe EJ Gaines (his ability to stay healthy remains a question mark) after that the only other non rookie corner on the roster is Cam Lewis. I think Jackson can play outside and inside and I think he has a real shot at the roster as the 5th or 6th corner. I'd put him at 50%. I am with you on Davis, Fromm and Hodgins - those numbers feel right to me. As for Bass.... I don't know anything about him but I will say that if they don't think he has at LEAST a 50/50 chance then I think it was a bad draft pick. If you are spending a pick on a kicker or punter then in my opinion you have to believe they have at least a 50/50 shot to win the job.

We need to play the best guy and that means the guy who has the best chance to win a game. We're not a developmental team anymore, we don't need to see what we have. If Fromm earns the backup spot that's one thing, but the odds are stacked against him even more this particular year. Now if Barkley has to play and he doesn't look like he can get you to the playoffs, that's a different story. That's kind of what Pittsburgh went through last year, Rudolph started but couldn't keep it going.

Our season is over if a backup QB is on the field. I agree we “don’t need to see what we have”, and Fromm should only get the backup job if he beats out Barkley. With that said, I’m confident that Fromm can beat out Barkley, and personally I’d rather see Fromm start a game over Barkley. Barkley is a below average backup, and his career proves that imo. I agree that Fromm shouldn’t be handed the backup job, but I hope he can win the job. I’d rather go with the unknown than a guy in Barkley who has proven he can’t play at the NFL level. 1
