Mango Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 I know cap numbers can always be worked and tweaked, but even with accounting for $10M in cap increase and roll over, they are still looking at needing to clear $40M in space. I am not sure I have ever seen anybody over that much. Maybe the Saints at one point? Absolutely wild. https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/cap/2021/
dorquemada Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 wow I just looked at that link you posted, that is absolutely crazy. I'm not sure any of those players are worth what they're getting there

Mango Posted April 28, 2020 Author Posted April 28, 2020 They can do it but they'd really be missing some players. Alshon's cap # is $18 mil, cut post-June 1 next year: $5 mil dead cap Desean's cap # is $11 mil, cut post-June 1 next year: $2 mil dead cap Goodwin's cap # is $7 mil, $0 guaranteed Brandon Graham, who will be due $18 mil next year, will be 33, and has a $5 mil dead cap # post-June 1/ Jason Kelce who has talked about retirement each of the past 2 offseasons which would save $8 mil.
Orlando Buffalo Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 My Lord look at those dead cap numbers of the high priced guys if cut- the top 8 guys are more than 70 percent of the cap and they can not cut them to get major savings. Wow that is terrible cap management.

Mountain Man Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 A massive cap jump is expected because of the new CBA which will make that gap a lot smaller
Cheektowaga Chad Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 Without looking into it, what is Carson wentz dead cap next year? Maybe there was more to the jalen hurts pick

billsfan89 Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 The Eagles are masters of the salary cap, they will be fine. They will make a few cuts and restructure a deal or two and get comfortably under the cap. One of the reasons the Eagles are consistently competitive is their quality coaching, solid drafting and good salary cap management. They might manage the salary cap better than any team in the league. Knowing how the Eagles maneuvered in the past it wouldn’t shock me to see them go from 40 million over the cap to 30-40 million under. 13 minutes ago, Mango said: They can do it but they'd really be missing some players. With the receivers they drafted this week I think they can easily afford to lost Godwin, Alshon and Desean and just replace them with a draft pick. All three are banged up a lot. That would save about 30 million on the cap. Brandon Graham saves you another 13 million, which gets you just under the cap. I am sure they can maneuver around a few other contracts and cut a few mid level players to get them enough to service their draft picks and have emergency money and maybe depending on how they pull it off sign a couple of mid-level contracts. 2
HappyDays Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 Good find. I wonder if this is why they drafted Hurts. This could be a make or break year for Wentz. If he isn't above the league average they can't afford his contract. 1
GunnerBill Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 Not sure Alshon will be on the roster this year let alone next year. He is done there. Hated by coaches and hated by the locker room. They are keeping him in the hope someone will trade for him. But eventually they will cut him. As for the rest... this is what you do when you think you are in a Superbowl window. You load up. Bills fans have to get used to the idea that being good is better than having cap space. 4 1

Those numbers are based on a salary cap increase from $198.2M to $209M. It might be more than that, but it’s not going to be by much. 1
thenorthremembers Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 Just took a look. They are either going to need to cut Fletcher Cox, Jeffrey, and Goodwin or they will have to trade Carson Wentz by June 1st. If Wentz doesnt stay healthy this year he could be on a new team in 2021.

If you polled Eagles fans after 2017, I think they would rather be Bills fans after we got all of that sweet sweet cap space. 2
Mc1320 Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 Since the current TV deals do not expire until 2022, the salary cap may not rise and could possibly be going down if they play a season without fans and all of the game day revenue dries up. Also, with the unemployment rate going through the roof I would expect apparel sales and other retail related revenue to crater as well. 3

Wow that is terrible cap management. Exactly correct! This is why I gag when all the media types gush every time old Howie's name surfaces. He is not one of the top GM's in the league and this cap problem is just more evidence of that. Like every other GM, he has hit on some moves but when you look at the whole picture, he's nothing special. He got them to a SB win and should receive credit for that.

Lol, this cap problem is a product of them winning a Super Bowl. And it’s not a real problem. 1

Whenever you see big numbers in the "restructure bonus" column, that means they've been basically pushing back the inevitable. About 20 mil restructure bonuses, then in 2021 you have void years too. They basically were playing that game where you move 10mil of base salary into the next 4 years. Eventually that player isn't good and you have like 3 different paid out bonuses that hit your cap at once if you release them early. Not to mention they did this like way too many times and have void years all the way into like 2023 and 2024. Essentially this is right though - re-work the WR corps, lose older players, and trade down in the draft to get more cheap contracts/players. They're stuck in a 2 year cap crunch since they dont have space to eat other dead money. They could move Javon Hargrave since his base salary would come off the books in a trade. Don't worry though- they're set at backup QB... 1
