US blames China for hacks, opening new front in cyber offensive

The United States and its foreign allies on Monday accused China of widespread malfeasance in cyberspace, including through a massive hack of Microsoft's email system and other ransomware attacks, a dramatic escalation in the increasingly urgent attempt by the Biden administration to stave off further breaches.

In a coordinated announcement, the White House and governments in Europe and Asia identified China's Ministry of State Security, the sprawling and secretive civilian intelligence agency, with using "criminal contract hackers" to conduct a range of destabilizing activities around the world for personal profit, including the Microsoft hack, according to a senior US administration official.

The administration official also said China was behind a specific ransomware attack against a US target that involved a "large ransom request" — and added that Chinese ransom demands have been in the "millions of dollars."

The CCP claims that it will "liberate Taiwan," and it warns against Japan deploying "one soldier, one plane or one ship."

The Biden administration again has China propped up on a tee, ready to be smacked 450 feet into the cheap seats of the global hierarchy.  I'm afraid that this administration, like the last administration and nearly all of the previous ones from the last sixty years, lacks the fortitude to do so.

"What we found really surprising and new here was the use of criminal contract hackers to conduct this unsanctioned cyber operation and really the criminal activity for financial gain. That was really eye-opening and surprising for us," a senior administration official said on Sunday ahead of the announcement.

Still, while American officials have raised concerns with the Chinese about the behavior, the US is stopping short of applying new punishment on Beijing as part of Monday's announcement. The official said the US was "not ruling out further actions to hold (China) accountable."

Sad.

China threatens to nuke Japan over Taiwan in video played on CCP-sanctioned channel

The Chinese Communist Party aired a video in which it warned Japan of a nuclear response and "full-scale war" if the island nation interferes in China’s handling of Taiwan.

The video, which appeared on a channel approved by the CCP, singles out Japan as the one exception to China’s policy to not use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear powers.

"We will use nuclear bombs first," the video said. "We will use nuclear bombs continuously. We will do this until Japan declares unconditional surrender for the second time."

The threats follow comments made two weeks ago by Japanese officials about Taiwan’s sovereignty, with Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso saying that Japan must "defend Taiwan," The Japan Times reported.

The CCP claims that it will "liberate Taiwan," and it warns against Japan deploying "one soldier, one plane or one ship."

Taylor Fravel, an expert on Chinese nuclear weapons policy who was unaware of the test, said a hypersonic glide vehicle armed with a nuclear warhead could help China “negate” US missile defence systems which are designed to destroy incoming ballistic missiles.

“Hypersonic glide vehicles . . . fly at lower trajectories and can manoeuvre in flight, which makes them hard to track and destroy,” said Fravel, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Fravel added that it would be “destabilising” if China fully developed and deployed such a weapon, but he cautioned that a test did not necessarily mean that Beijing would deploy the capability.

Meanwhile US military officials post their feet on Twitter.

Who is/are the idiot/idiots who leaked the contents of the report to say that the US was surprised by it?

Probably whichever one on the intelligence committee that’s currently sleeping with a Chinese asset.

I think that's "fake news" in a way.  I doubt the US was completely unaware it happened, nor were the Chinese the first to do it.  Just like with Iran, there are people with real hard-ons for conflict with China.  The US has the majority of intel satellites and it's got a unmanned space shuttle doing something in orbit.   They knew.

My guess is the US has already achieved this milestone, and the Chinese may be second.

When it comes to China, I'm more concerned that the West, with some weak leaders, is 100% completely distracted with Covid and internal shenanigans and the Chinese will take their shot for Taiwan and the islands.
