Take the Covid19 discussion to one of the several appropriate threads dedicated to it.

I'm about to spend some time I could put to better use cleaning up the thread.

I was thinking recently about the last few Bills offseasons and couldn't really remember too many re-signings, so I decided to look more into it. Here's the list of all the players we've re-signed (besides futures contracts) since 2015, per the Bills' transactions page.

It feels good to finally have homegrown talent on this team that's worth re-signing, because for the last 5+ years it's been pretty barren.

2019

  • Jordan Phillips, 1-year
  • Deon Lacey, 1-year

2018

  • n/a

2017

  • Joe Banyard, 1-year (8 weeks)
  • Brandon Tate, 1-year
  • Colton Schmidt, 2 years
  • Ramon Humber, 1-year
  • Colt Anderson, 1-year

2016

  • Richie Incognito, 3 years

2015

  • Marcus Easley, 1-year
  • Jerry Hughes, 5 years

I did love Jordan Phillips sack numbers but I never really remember him disrupting on a regular basis.  I looked at him as more clean up sacks.

I had a feeling the Bills would allow him to test free agency.

I'd like to have him back but not the price it will command though.

You remember correctly. If his value just isn't there as basically all the free agent rankings seem to indicate, it's entirely possible we can bring him back on the cheap. We'll see though. As that list indicates, there's likely a lot of room for us to improve at DT.

It will be interesting to see what his market actually ends up being

I remember when EJ Gaines was an UFA after his good season in Buffalo....I believe rumors were he was going to get in the neighborhood of a multi year deal at about $8 million per.

I think he signed with the Browns at 1 year $4 million.

I don't think Phillips would be that low but I could see a maybe a 3 year $30 million or so?  I am completely guessing here and really have no idea.

I think the 1/$4 is probably closer than 3/$30 but depends on the years. Ultimately I expect Phillips to end up in the $5-7 mil per year range, in which case I suspect he takes a short deal to try to continue improving his value.

Not really a rumor, but worth pointing out that we were linked to Melvin Gordon quite a bit this past year. I don't really want to spend serious money on a RB, but if his market is totally dry and he comes in under Ekeler's new contract, it wouldn't be that bad.

he was a terror in that titans game I think. he also had that amazing jumped snap in the first fins game where he got to fitz before he could even hand it off. that play set up the 2nd and long that white picked off.... but ya. other than that it seems sorta like mop up work.

I did enjoy his occasional electric play and he took it as a personal duty to be the crowd hype man. those guys always have a soft spot with me...… regardless I think he probably will command quite a bit more than what he's worth.

It is at times like this where Beane is showing his worth.......he doesnt overspend for players while still finding a way to improve positions

That is what teams that are good every year too......its a new thing for us as bills fans because before Beane we didnt have it

Anyone else secretly afraid that the Bills will offer big money to either Henry or Gordon?

I think the Titans end up using the Franchise Tag on Henry still and I can't see Beane/McDermott shelling out big $$$ for a RB in FA. I can see them in the $4,000,000-$6,000,000 range for a guy though. If Gordon comes at that price I wouldn't mind.

Yes, I would be secretly afraid of that.  Someone will give Henry Zeke money.  I don't want to spend that for a RB.

I doubt Gordon would take 7Mil/yr.

I wonder if you could convince one of them to take a deal of around 5-6Mil/yr for Gordon or around 8-9Mil for Henry, but it's all guaranteed?  That way they get their money and we get a discount on a good player.  It's a risk, but could have great cap relief later on.

not necessarily directed at you, per sey John but just the sentiment i see in many posts these days and one i have addressed in a couple other postings...

this sentiment reflects the past two decades before McBeane showed up. the problem is quickly becoming that those talent deficient teams are exactly that, a thing of the past. the talent level on this team is elevated across the board, it is no longer going to be easy to find upgrades off the scrap heap. sure, we can still find upgrades at relatively cheap prices for select positions but it is increasingly harder and harder to do on the curve we are currently we find ourselves on.

good problems to have.

Afraid?  No.  Big money for a Rb is still relativley low on the in the overall spectrum of money.  Ironicly, with the growing trend of drafting Rb vs signing them.  I think value is swinging to signing one.  Singeltary is good but seems better in a limited touch basis.  The offense needs a lead back imo.  Buffalo can get more impact vs the money at Rb compared to any position this year.
