Big Turk Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 I know the players are pretty adamant they will not accept a 17th game but they can always be bought with money...but they will want a lot for this and am unsure if the owners will be willing to give it...I could see both sides really digging in their feet here and ending up with a prolonged lockout over the issue. Eventually I see the players caving but not before they get a lot more money and better protections. Anyone else nervous about a potential lockout and how likely as a percentage do you see this as a possibility? I'm going to say 60%. https://www.yahoo.com/sports/nfl-proposed-playoff-expansion-could-be-tipping-point-in-greed-015752890.html
Bleedbuffaloblue Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 Not really. Sounds like the 17th game has already been agreed to in principle as long as the Owners go along with a reduction preseason games and full contact practices during both training camp and regular season. Really doesn’t appear like there is the kind of opposition that would result in a strike or lockout. The players will probably push the owners for a couple last minute concessions that may or may not be agreed too, but that is probably it. Really think both sides want to get this new CBA done ASAP. Nobody is interested in killing the golden goose.

Only a very few players don't want a 17ty game in reality. Edited February 20, 2020 by Hardhatharry
Brianmoorman4jesus Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 Just give them another bye. 17 games with 2 byes. That gives the nfl 19 weeks. Better for everyone. 2
Greg S Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 (edited) I am not so sure I want expanded playoffs. I don't want the NFL to become like the NHL/NBA with how many teams make the playoffs. What are we going to have a 6-10 team making the playoffs. I mean 6-11 if they have a 17 game season. Keep it at 16 games and don't add more playoff teams. JMHO!!! Edited February 20, 2020 by Greg S
aristocrat Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 are they negotiating with the players union now? or is this the owners putting their proposal together?

I'm going to say 60%. https://www.yahoo.com/sports/nfl-proposed-playoff-expansion-could-be-tipping-point-in-greed-015752890.html Two CBAs ago the owners were in disarray and took it in the shorts a bit, but managed to put a clause in to get out of that deal out early. Then they got their crap together, opted out early and hammered the players on the last deal. So I’d expect the players to get back a little bit here. But they are inherently at a disadvantage since they are so short term dependent while the owners can play the long game. I get the feeling that this might be the issue. That the players are looking at the last deal and thinking they should’ve done better and need to this time while the owners think they have the advantage and can get an even better deal. They’re both probably right and that’s going to be the issue. The easy way out is to find some more money by having an extra regular season game or more playoff teams. I have no idea where this lands, but it’s a situation ripe for an impasse. 4 minutes ago, aristocrat said: are they negotiating with the players union now? or is this the owners putting their proposal together? They’ve been negotiating. The league has been pushing a 17 game season and/or more playoff teams, but the players union has rebuffed them to this point.
First Round Bust Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 I likey..options include 17th game played at neutral sites: Europe, Canada, Hawaii, Mexico and some US college stadiums: London x2, Berlin and Dortmund (huge stadium), Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Honolulu, Mexico City x2 and college stadiums (highest bidders) Orlando, Clemson, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Tenn, Alabama, Cal-Berkley, Oregon, come to mind...maybe the big house in Ann Arbor (100k+) and/or perhaps the conf winners get to play their17th game at home each as well as a reward...cuz its all about the rich getting richer
ALF Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 Teams that don't play at neutral site could have 9 home games one year then 9 away games the next year.
Big Turk Posted February 20, 2020 Author Posted February 20, 2020 (edited) I think the problem the players are going to have is do all the contracts automatically get an additional 1/16th of a game check added onto their current contracts if they play a 17th game since they get paid by the game, and how does this extra game factor into future contract demands? Do they automatically seek to add an additional 1/16th to what they would normally be asking for? Edited February 20, 2020 by matter2003
Hardhatharry Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 The NFL wouldn't be talking about it and pushing so hard if they thought it would cause a lockout. They have been negotiating with this for a while it will happen, don't see a lockout.

Its only one extra team...so 7 out of 16 would make the playoffs, which is still under half the teams...NHL 16 out of 31 teams make the playoffs, NBA 16 out of 30 teams make the playoffs, MLB is expanding playoffs or trying to making it 14 out of 30 teams making the playoffs... Currently NFL and MLB have the most "exclusive" postseason clubs with 12 out of 32(37.5%) NFL teams making it and 10 out of 30(30%) MLB teams making it... I don't see a problem with it...the NFC had legit good teams that missed the playoffs this year
Mr. WEO Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 Players union has been fine with this for weeks. Why would there be a lockout? 1
aristocrat Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 if players get the full guaranteed deals there will be no lockout.

You really can't compare the NFL to the other leagues. The NHL, NBA, MLB all have best of 7 playoff series (best of 5 for MLB Rd 1). Football is one and done. JMO but I would keep everything as it is right now. I know this is a way for the league to make more $$$$ so it probably will happen. 1

No worse than crap division winners making it while good potential wildcard teams miss out in some years
MJS Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 Really don't want expanded playoffs. Diluting the quality of the playoffs is not the answer. 16 minutes ago, matter2003 said: No worse than crap division winners making it while good potential wildcard teams miss out in some years Except crappy teams making it happens more often if they expand it.
PaoloBillsFanFromItaly Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 I like 17 regular seasons games with 2 byes. I don't like expanding playoff grid.
