Was reading this Vic Carruci article TBN article about filling the 'Zo leadership void

https://buffalonews.com/2020/02/14/buffalo-bills-sean-mcdermott-lorenzo-alexander-eric-wood-kyle-williams-vic-carucci-nfl-football/

He quoted Eric Wood:

"That's something that they've had to adjust to the last two years with two really prominent leaders in Kyle Williams and Lorenzo Alexander both retiring, and this year it'll be the next guy's chance to step up," said Wood, now the Bills' radio analyst. "We'll see who that is. They have done really well drafting. They've drafted guys that were leaders on their college teams – guys like Tre'Davious White, who was a captain at LSU and wore No. 18 there, which is the most prominent honor within their team. Tremaine Edmunds was a captain last year at 21 years old. Josh Allen, super young, and he was a captain as well."

What is the significance or meaning of wearing 18 at LSU?

It's just a tradition that they started giving it to leaders

Matt mauck wore it and won the natty in 04ish and then I believe he gave it to Hester who won it in 07

And it's been a tradition there since

2003, thanks to Matt “the dentist” Mauck.  #18 in their program stands for success.  Character both on and off the field.

Thanks guys.

Wow

“All we have to tell the scouts now is, ‘He’s our 18,’” Marucci said. “And that usually wipes out any more questions.”

Explains why Tre’ White’s Twitter (or Instagram?) handle is “Oneeight” - big point of pride.

This is interesting... I believe that DE (Chassion) that some have linked us to this draft season wears 18.

I don’t think he makes it out of the top 10, unfortunately (especially after the combine).  But he’s a freak and yes, a permanent captain (#18).

Off the topic and I’m sure some guys here would hate this, but if we do trade up it’s my feeling we’d do it for a TE, not a WR.

Edit: autocorrect is f’ing out of control.  I typed “DE” not TE, and I meant DE not TE.

Didn't we just draft two TE's in last years draft?

Interesting, but I just don’t see it.  Maybe mid-round, but the Bills trying to bring in Vets so early tells me they are more interested in veteran influence to help the young guys grow.   I think if they trade, it’s for a complete WR they absolutely covet, like Jeudy.  TE is such a hard position to get starter production from these days.  But nothing’s impossible!  ?

See above, me bad meant DE and somehow this iPad decided I really meant something else ?

I guess I must be talking about TE a lot these days ?

I agree an edge guy has to be top of mind.  But I think they’ll be players in FA for one.  I think Beane thinks we’re closer than he’s letting on.  I’m not a big “mock” fan, but this could be the year that Buffalo grabs a top FA (or two) and trades up for their guy if they feel they’re “there”.  Probably just hopeless optimism on my part, but we’ll see.  March and April can’t get here fast enough.

I would like to see us do both - make a play in FA AND draft a guy.  Hopefully we’ll be successful enough in FA and with resigning guys that Beane will let the draft come to him, but I don’t think he’d have a compunction in making moves if he needs to.

Agree 100%!  If the right guy is willing to come to Buffalo and fits the defense and culture, I think Beane’s proven he’ll make a strong, concerted effort.   I can imagine the Bills will be more active in trade discussions this year, too.  Players that had tough situations last year, leading to coaching turnover (or hot seat talk) would be ideal.  Cleveland and Atlanta come to mind.   Dallas has a few as well.   It all depends on how close they think we REALLY are though.   I think we’ll learn a lot about Beane this offseason as he looks to make his mark.

If the Bills keep drafting and FA'ing so well the next year or two

(1) We're winning the AFC East in 2020 and a SB in 2021, and
(2) We'll be in absolute salary cap hell in 2023, with way too many great players and a great QB all wanting paychecks consistent with their talent.

I would take that problem in a heartbeat, if (1) comes true.

Wasn’t Jamal Adams taken #6 while Tre wore #18 and lasted until we took him? Nothing against Adams, but that tells you something about Tre.
