Dopey Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 Gregg Rosenthal wrote an article for nfl.com on what each AFC team should do to dethrone the Chiefs next year. He say we should add more offensive play makers(duh). He doesn't want Bills fans to fool themselves into thinking Josh carry the Bills on his arm alone. I found it interesting that he seems to like Daboll and how he schemes to cover up weaknesses and accentuate his strengths. A few more interesting tidbits: Colts should take on Rivers(not Brady) and the Raiders should move on from Carr and Miami is going to have to move up for Tua. I looked to see if anyone else posted this, but couldn't find anything. CBennett Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 Get josh some guys that can get open and actually CATCH the ball when it hits them in the hands.. 13 3 3
Steptide Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 The thing that's always surprised me is that McDermott always credits Andy Reid as being a big influence/mentor to him, yet for 3 seasons we've seen a lack of focus on the offense. This upcoming draft really needs to focus on the offense. We need 2 more solid recievers that will be a part of this team for 5 years or longer. I think we're ok at tight end. Get some depth at o line in the later rounds and I think we'll be in pretty good shape for 2020 4
eball Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 Terrible column. Rosenthal takes two not-so-veiled shots at Allen while supposedly writing about how the Bills can win a Super Bowl. Calls him a "poor man's Cam Newton" and makes some other comment that gives insight into his opinion that Allen isn't any good. I wish I hadn't clicked because I feel dumber for having done so. 4 1 1 1

To many times last year Allen was running for his life. I want to see the Bills have an O-Line like the 49'ers, Chiefs, Ravens. Having a strong OL that can dominate. Think of what that will do not only for JA but DS as well. I also agree that we need to bring in another weapon at WR to go with what we have but improving the OL is the #1 priority from me on that side of the ball. On the defense I want to see us get better at getting to the QB. Get to work Beane. 2 2

That said, the key difference is that Reid is an offensive-minded guy whereas McD has a defensive background. That undoubtedly plays a role in Reid's focus on the Offense as opposed to McD's focus on the Defense. 2

He has a scheme that covers up his weaknesses and accentuates his strengths under underrated play caller Brian Daboll. " OK, well first of all, there are at this point 2, maybe 3, QB who can "carry a franchise with their arm alone". And even they strongly benefit from, or even need, a good offensive line to give them some time (certainly Aaron Rodgers does) and at least one top-notch receiving talent who can get open and haul in a contested catch or a throw that's a bit off. I'm not sure what he means by "covers up his weaknesses and accentuates his strengths". Daboll takes more crap here than he should, but some of Daboll's play calling and sequences are strange and at times, seem designed to treat Allen as a much more developed and proficient passer than he is at this point (Eagles game, Browns game, end of Houston game). 2

You can debate the effectiveness, but not the focus IMO Going from a truly horrible offense to slightly below average offense was done out of desperate need this past off season. Now!! is the time to really improve the offense, and get it up to above average. Beane I will assume (yes dangerous) knows this all to well. Our current offense has struggled to score three touchdowns a game on average for many obvious reasons, and that needs to be corrected this off season or we will be spinning our wheels, which will increase the difficulty of getting into the postseason in 2020. Yes attention needs to be given to both sides of the ball, but the Offense needs to be the priority if another playoff run is going to be a seriously considered. Go Bills!!!

I think I'll give it another off season before concluding they've done a poor job. The offence was terrible 2 seasons ago and was never going to become above average in one off season. It did show some improvment last year due to some smart additions in FA and acquiring singletary in the draft was a good move for now and the future. This off season needs to focus on bringing in high quality at some key positions on the offence, not just numbers, I'll defer judgement until the start of next season. If we look at the difference between, say, the Dallas game or the 2nd Miami game where Allen looked very good vs. the Eagles or Browns game or several games later in the season where he didn't, it's very striking that in those games, Allen had less time. Now some of that might not be on the O-line per se - some of it may be the design of the protections or the protection call. But it's pretty clear to me that whatever the root cause may be, our OL simply isn't good enough yet to protect, or to support a run game, against an elite defensive front.

You can have a huge influence on someone in terms of their coaching style and the way they do things without making them into a clone of that person. 1

wppete Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 I hope they get Robby Anderson in FA and wither Laviska Shenault or Tee Higgins. These guys along with John Brown, Cole Beasley and Dawson Knox should be some great weapons for JA. 1 1
Virgil Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 I absolutely think Miami will need to move up to 3 for Tua. The top 2 picks are locks and the Giants won’t trade out. That leaves the #3 pick with Detroit as the hot pick. Everyone knows Miami wants Tua and that’s the spot to jump to in order to get him. I see Carolina as the biggest competition to move up for him.
Bill from NYC Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 If the Bills get a tall wider receiver in free agency (Green?), I hope that they draft Henry Ruggs. He will more than likely be the fastest player in the NFL from day 1. Ruggs can run as far as Josh can throw it and get downfield in the blink of an eye.

I think he might be referring to the RPOs in the red zone, but who knows. I think you’re correct about Daboll treating Allen like a more developed and experienced QB. I think Daboll falls on the sink or swim side of QB development, and Allen’s ability to grow and mature has lead to Daboll putting too much on his plate at times. Considering Allen’s seemingly bi-annual performance improvements Im not sure that Daboll has taken the wrong approach. Time will tell, but some guys do better with everything on their plate. Allen’s had some bad moments because of this. However, he always rebounds and improves. Daboll is likely playing a long game here and willing to let Allen take his lumps early.
