SoCal Deek
What is wrong with people? The longest part of developing any medication or vaccine is NOT the development itself. The longest part is the time trials. They typically want to see if the drug is harmful to lab animals, then they start limited human trials, then they wait YEARS to see if there are unexpected long term side effects. Those precautionary steps were sped up in Operation Warp Speed ...which is pretty much ALL that Trump (or Biden) can actually do. The President can try and get the government agencies out of the way. Which was done in this case so that the vaccines would be allowed to be injected into humans on a mass scale. We still have no idea whether everyone is going to grow a third eyeball in a year or two! Why? Because the vaccine trials simply haven’t run that long. The world decided they simply couldn’t wait for the results.
Big Blitz
Covid-19 News: South Africa Halts Use of AstraZeneca Vaccine Scientists in South Africa said on Sunday that a similar problem held among people who had been infected by earlier versions of the coronavirus: the immunity they acquired naturally did not appear to protect them from mild or moderate cases when reinfected by the variant, known as B.1.351. The developments, coming nearly a week after a million doses of the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine arrived in South Africa, were an enormous setback for the country, where more than 46,000 people are known to have died from the virus. And they were another sign of the dangers posed by new mutations in the coronavirus. The B.1.351 variant has already spread to at least 32 countries, including the United States. It was not clear from the studies outlined by South African scientists on Sunday whether the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine protected against severe disease from the B.1.351 variant. The clinical trial participants who were evaluated were relatively young and unlikely to become severely ill, making it impossible for the scientists to determine if the variant interfered with the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine’s ability to protect against severe Covid-19, hospitalizations, or deaths. However, based on the immune responses detected in blood samples from people who were given the vaccine, the scientists said they believed that the vaccine could yet protect against more severe cases. If further studies show that it does, South African health officials said on Sunday that they would consider resuming use of the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine. Even so, the fact that it showed minimal efficacy in preventing mild and moderate cases of the new variant added to the mounting evidence that B.1.351 makes current vaccines less effective. These research findings have not been published in a scientific journal. Pfizer and Moderna have both said that preliminary laboratory studies indicate that their vaccines, while still protective, are less effective against B.1.351. Novavax and Johnson & Johnson have also sequenced test samples from their clinical trial participants in South Africa, where B.1.351 caused the vast majority of cases — and both reported lower efficacy there than in the United States. “These results are very much a reality check,” Shabir Madhi, a virologist at University of the Witwatersrand who ran the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine trial in South Africa, said of the findings released on Sunday. https://www.nytimes.com/live/2021/02/07/world/covid-19-coronavirus/south-africa-says-astrazenecas-vaccine-is-not-very-effective-at-stopping-a-variant-from-causing-illness New Variants!!! I think that the US has to rethink their overall ineffective approach to pandemic response. We need some mechanism where the US on CDC advisement can declare a Federal pandemic emergency that streamlines prevention and vaccination protocols and removes our current fragmented state-by-state management of the response efforts. It has been a cluster ****

It would have swayed the election. Source? Also, Trump was such a divisive figure he could've cured cancer a month before the election and not a single vote would've changed. Big Blitz
What's the justification, Dr? Long term indefinite mask wearing? More social distancing indefinitely? Nah. We'll need a bit more at this point then just "orders" or "requests."

I don't wear one when I walk my dog cuz I'm outside and never get close to anyone. If someone is approaching me there is plenty of time for one of us to cross the street. Now if I go into a store something I do. Be careful, but don't be silly.
B-Man
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/the-kids-arent-alright SALENA ZITO: The Kids Aren’t Alright. One year ago, Lena Carson was pulling straight A’s at the city’s Creative and Performing Arts School across the river from her parent’s home. She also swam every day at the local YMCA in preparation to compete at the annual state competition and enjoyed the everyday social life of a teenager. Today, she is sitting at home. Again. It has been nearly a year since she walked into CAPA, a magnet school she had to earn admission to through a portfolio of her work, and interacted with her teachers or friends. Her daily swims are gone, along with her social life. Her outside activities have diminished to walking the dog around the block. . . . A bright student who skipped a grade, her straight A’s have dipped to D’s, and Lena says she struggles to complete assignments, not because she can’t but because of the lost will. “I have nothing to look forward to,” she said. Keeping the Karens happy comes with a lot of collateral damage.

RiotAct
oh wow, so people with comorbidities can sign up for vaccines here in NYS starting next Monday, and obesity is on the list. That’s... like 40% of the state probably (and 60% of Erie County)

It's all about messaging...and the Media was all-in on getting rid of Trump. Nothing he did or said would have changed that, so the casual voter only heard bad stuff, because that's what they wanted they the casual voter to think.

But they would have been forced to report that the vaccines were effective and would be available soon. That would have assuaged a lot of peoples' fears.

Spend anytime in any store and you're right - 6 out of the 10 people you'd first see upon entering are probably going to be obese. The parents are going to obese and their kids likely are too. You'd think with how COVID preys on the vitamin deficient obese body, you'd see a push not only for checking vitamin levels, healthier eating and getting out and getting a little exercise, but a push to get folks into medical/bariatric weight management programs. There is help out there.
Big Blitz
A World Health Organization team of experts wrapped up their visit to the Chinese city of Wuhan on Tuesday, with the conclusion that the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 is unlikely to have leaked from a Chinese lab and most probably jumped to humans from a yet-to-be-identified animal. WHO food safety and animal diseases expert Peter Ben Embarek told reporters at a briefing that the team’s investigation into the possible origins of the coronavirus in Wuhan, where the first cases were discovered in December 2019, found it was “extremely unlikely” that the virus originated in a lab, the Associated Press reported. https://on.mktw.net/2Z2GcRr
