Like you, @shoshin, I can't find anything at the moment that explains their high death to cases ratio. A fair number of these reports but they are in the minority and if anything, the symptoms on round 2 were very minor. No definitive research on how long people hold their immunity (because not much time has passed and you can't go around infecting people to see if they will get it again!). I'm not losing much sleep over these studies yet--they are likely to be overhyped. 1

Big Blitz Posted July 10, 2020 Posted July 10, 2020 5 hours ago, shoshin said: PA back on the rise. The reason they can resume normalcy in those countries and Canada is likely less because they got to herd immunity (in most of those countries, the outbreaks were geographically pretty limited) than because their cases are now so incredibly low. They had a unified plan: serious shutdown, slow reopen, complaint masking and distancing, etc. They did what we wouldn't. We are trying a different plan with long term consequences TBD but at 900 new deaths per day recently. NJ has been in the top 5 in deaths almost every day this week. I can't find any report or data to suggest a data dump but given the low cases, it has to be but I can't back that up. Someone in the media is not digging in on this. The rest are the places you'd expect with the overburdened hospitals and cases that won't go away, and that are starting to consider shutdowns and enacting them again. Overall, we have gone from 500 and less deaths per day to nearly 1000 in a week--that is some jump. Newsome never thumped his chest on CA's success. Can't say the same for DeSantis and Abbott. Was this avoidable with a single plan (see most EU countries), consistent messaging on masks and distancing, and idiots not making defeating Covid into a party-driven war? Imagine, if you will, making defeating a disease about party politics. This special kind of idiocy is something you can see play out, right here, daily, on The Twilight Zone a football discussion board. Was Newsome under attack since March like Texas and Florida were? No politician worth anything in 2020 can sit back and let the media crucify them 24/7. Florida and Texas had nothing close to the numbers other states were having from March thru early June. Dirty little secret: There was no running and hiding from this thing. Period. Spare me masks. Spare me that this state distanced better. Its nonsense. The minute we came out of hiding it was coming. If it hadn't got there yet---the problem was we had the whole country do the exact same thing in March when it wasn't really anywhere but the Northeast. Virginia is about to be Arizona also. And I can tell you we've been hiding.....we've been in masks.....we've done everything Gov Blackface has said via reopening. The Karen's in this state are going to cause another lockdown once the cases get to 2K a day by late July. We've hit neither metric here. 15-20% infected. 500 plus dead per million. Only states like Montana can avoid that. 1

I think he totally knows it's media driven, and he also knows why: to freak people out (majority of country actually believes it's getting worse) to get the country to fully shut down again, which would decimate the economy and give enough people reason to believe it's time to try something new, like an angry, old, racist white guy who's been in politics for over 40 years and is suddenly going to fix things he's been unable to fix in his previous 40 years. They hate Trump so much they are fine seeing thousands of businesses shut down forever just to get him out of office. 3 1

But a majority of Americans DO NOT see the data that shows (a) testing has increased dramatically, so naturally cases will increase and (b) deaths have declined relative to case increases. But they'll figure it out when they can't go back to work and start losing their jobs, homes and livelihoods because the panic porn headlines have they desired outcome of them pissing their pants. 1

A: The % positive rate has also increased with increased testing. Mid-June the US was at 4.3%. The US is now at 8.4%. Here is a great chart that allows you to toggle state by state - https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/testing/individual-states/usa B: Indeed. Deaths will rise, though, as they lag behind case rises, however, we should not expect to see the same levels of death in the south because of what was learned from the first spikes in the NE and advancements in therapy. If we do see the same levels I would be shocked. 1

Big Blitz Posted July 10, 2020 Posted July 10, 2020 Health experts won’t ask Americans to take off their masks anytime soon. That’s the take of Eric Toner, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. He has been preparing for an outbreak like the novel coronavirus as part of his work for years. https://nypost.com/2020/07/06/virus-expert-claims-americans-will-wear-masks-for-several-years/
shoshin Posted July 10, 2020 Posted July 10, 2020 (edited) 5 hours ago, Magox said: A) I didn’t mention Pennsylvania Is NYC metro the only place in the US that you think the virus has burned out and reached immunity? The only place cases won't rise again? Quote B) New Jersey is seeing no jump up to this point in new cases which indicates the deaths are coming from backlog and older patients (who they have done a terrible job of protecting) that have been hospitalized for months. That's your speculation. I share the same thoughts especially based on last week's big number dump. What I'm asking is why no one is reporting what's happening with the new deaths. Quote 3) we haven’t gone from 500-1000 a day. You have to look at 7 day moving average and it’s around 600. Which is what I predicted. I predicted we would bottom out at around 500 over a month ago and that is EXACTLY where it bottomed out. I also said two weeks ago that I thought this was the week we would see it increase which it was. That trend will continue to go higher for the next 4-6 weeks Before it begins to head down. We will see if that plays out. On 5/25/2020 at 8:49 PM, Magox said: My optimistic hopes are that we get down to below 300 on average. You start a lot of sentences with "I predicted" and "I said." Just wanted to look this one up. ^^ If you're going to keep taking credit for your predictions, you should say you predicted 300, not 500. No idea about your other "predictions." Quote 4) You don’t understand how this country works. The only way that you can enforce a “national plan” is by breaking the constitution in which states would be able to challenge it in court. There would have been at least three ways for the feds to have a plan for the country: (1) The preferred way: Get all the governors together and get buy in from everyone on a plan that they'd agree to follow at a minimum. That would require consensus building, which is in short supply, but the right leader could have made it happen. (2) Withhold any one of many sources of critical fed aid unless states buy into the plan. (3) National emergency measures can trump state rights. Quote This is just a bunch of hand wringing from someone who buys into what the media’s hysteria. That’s what you do, you buy into media panic porn and everything they tell you. Uh huh. You keep saying that. And I keep telling you we should be open and should never have close or maybe closed at most NYC metro and no place else for more than a couple weeks while we gave time for healthcare workers to get ready. So the above quote is your own narrative that is not representative of my positions. I don't know why you keep saying it. Quote Maybe you can try to critically think for yourself once in a while. I present the data. You can come to any conclusion you want. I suggest some of mine but I'm not more expert than you. The media in many ways would suggest we remain in lockdown until the vaccine comes. That's absurd. We should be out and about, masked up indoors, protecting the vulnerable, schools open 100%, businesses open 100% except maybe in places where there are hospital issues (right now TX, FL, AZ, SoCal). So I guess you lied about my position again. No surprise: You seem to have a penchant for doing that. Is it just because I have had to punch some holes in your numbers. Mostly you post good stuff--no need to take it all personally. I think our positions are mostly aligned on what we should be doing policy-wise. Quote 5). Poor naive shoshin. Doesn’t believe that the whole hysteria from the media isn’t politically driven. You can have discussions about numbers without being a dick. If I started calling you names, the conversations would be a lot less productive in this thread. Keep it up if you want but it seems unnecessary. Edited July 10, 2020 by shoshin
