USA TODAY COLUMN: Protests show ‘two Americas’ — those who lost their jobs and those still getting paid.

“People don’t appreciate being condescended to and bossed around, especially when the leaders ask them for sacrifices without empathy and humility.”

Plus: “Ultimately, this rising resentment is itself a failure of public health, and of public health administration. You can complain that people are irrational and resentful, that they don’t ‘believe in science,’ or whatever. But people are what they are, and their response to epidemics is surprisingly predictable. If your messaging — and your behavior — inspires resentment that causes people to resist and ignore public health messages, then you have failed at your job, whatever the amount of scientific knowledge you bring to bear.”

I’ll just add that one thing that has appalled me — in the comments here, on social media, and well, everywhere — is that so many people dealing with a situation full of uncertainty and unreliable data are so dead-certain of their positions and so abusive of people who disagree. And that’s certainly true of both sides in this debate.

Quest Diagnostics: COVID-19 test capacity is outpacing demand

  Quote

Quest says it has not experience a test backlog for nearly a week, and anticipates being able to test 50,000 people per day.

Quest Diagnostics provided an update on Monday about its ability to test for coronavirus, saying its testing capacity is outpacing demand. Quest reports that it has performed more than 940,000 COVID-19 diagnostic tests thus far and says it will be able to start testing up to 350,000 people a week.

Quest says it has not experience a test backlog for nearly a week, and anticipates being able to test 50,000 people per day.

Yes.

Despite their increased capacity to make more tests, there still aren't enough tests available nationwide.

Hot mic — the “hoax” part isn’t interesting (John is talking about the LA county study posted yesterday) despite the hype it’s likely to get, it’s the comment that everyone in the White House press core having already been vaccinated.

Grain of salt.

That's not their issue.  That may be the issue with other tests but not Quest Diagnostics'.

They aren't saying we don't have enough tests to keep up with demand, but rather that the demand cannot keep up with their testing capacity.

You'll have to forgive him.  Reading doesn't seem to be his strong suit.

But that's also different from having enough human capacity to administer the tests, and doctors encouraging people to come take the tests when that just puts others at risk.

Capacity in numbers of tests available is not the issue.

These swab tests are not fast enough for what we truly need to get ahead of this in a big way. When there's true availability of an accurate serological test, that will give us a big leg up.

Yes, it is. They are saying they have the capacity to run more tests, but Quest does not administer the tests. You keep making this same mistake.

Quest is a lab. They ship a test. ANOTHER PERSON ADMINISTERS IT. Then that administering person ships it to Quest to run the test.

Not every place has the human resource to administer the test or wants to waste that person's time when their time is more valuable running a test on everyone who walks through the door. And most PCPs are trying to keep that person from harm so they tell people to stay home unless it's serious.

Update: Politico throws a little cold water on Schumer’s dotted-Is and crossed Ts:

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Democrats and the Trump administration have reached a deal on a new round of coronavirus aid, though staffers working on the bill cautioned negotiations were not complete. …

Aides in both parties said they were still finalizing the legislation and Schumer said staffers were still working out the particulars of the massive package, which will mark Congress’s fourth major infusion of coronavirus aid.

They have a few hours to knock out the remaining details. If Schumer got out over his skis on this, good luck returning to the bargaining table.
