"But without public scrutiny, more than 600 law enforcement agencies have started using Clearview in the past year, according to the company, which declined to provide a list. The computer code underlying its app, analyzed by The New York Times, includes programming language to pair it with augmented-reality glasses; users would potentially be able to identify every person they saw. The tool could identify activists at a protest or an attractive stranger on the subway, revealing not just their names but where they lived, what they did and whom they knew."

“It’s creepy what they’re doing, but there will be many more of these companies. There is no monopoly on math,” said Al Gidari, a privacy professor at Stanford Law School. “Absent a very strong federal privacy law, we’re all screwed.”

They been doing that for at least 4 years in North Jersey. You walk through and it says "welcome back (persons name)" it records visible tattoos also.

Jeez.. it wasn't that long ago when people in America actually cared about privacy.

I guess a sense of "security" is more important nowadays.

The iphone recognizes its owner's face after the owner allows it to do that.  The company mentioned in the article created an app that analyzes a stranger's face and allegedly compares it to over a billion images scraped from all over the internet and identifies the stranger, whether the stranger likes it or not.  Both use facial recognition technology, but the Clearview app potentially has a much greater impact on your privacy.  Just my opinion, but I think it's sad that so few people care about privacy these days.

As the Stanford law professor said in the article - - "Absent a very strong federal privacy law, we're all screwed."

We gave up the right to privacy the second the internet was invented. Anything that goes over a network connection is fair game, ask any hacker. Including all these posts. Social apps that everyone uses just makes it worse for us and easier for them. It went from 15 minutes of fame to 15 seconds. Which is about the same time as most people's attention span.

The double edged sword is illustrated so clearly by this one sentence:

Federal and state law enforcement officers said that while they had only limited knowledge of how Clearview works and who is behind it, they had used its app to help solve shoplifting, identity theft, credit card fraud, murder and child sexual exploitation cases.

Did anyone think this wasn’t already the case?

Facebook has been accurately suggesting picture tags for years and I’m sure they are not the most advanced game in town.

...the BIGGER and SADDER "edge" is how do those who have the technology available abuse it for personal gain?....how many employed in the security surveillance arena, albeit government agencies or private firms are actually "surfing" for unintended reasons?....how the hell do you police that?.....control now is certainly dubious....

part of the problem is tech is changing faster than our govt can really keep up- both due to slow processing times of laws and poor comprehension of technology by our politicians.

a full scale overhaul of the institutions regulating would be needed before you could even begin to discuss privacy

Bruh if they're using your microphone without telling you they're more than likely using your camera too.

That's what a Band-Aid® or electrical tape is for.

You can also set app permissions.  But nothing beats the piece of tape.
