ICanSleepWhenI'mDead Posted January 20, 2020 Posted January 20, 2020 (edited) From https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/18/technology/clearview-privacy-facial-recognition.html?utm_source=pocket-newtab "But without public scrutiny, more than 600 law enforcement agencies have started using Clearview in the past year, according to the company, which declined to provide a list. The computer code underlying its app, analyzed by The New York Times, includes programming language to pair it with augmented-reality glasses; users would potentially be able to identify every person they saw. The tool could identify activists at a protest or an attractive stranger on the subway, revealing not just their names but where they lived, what they did and whom they knew." * * * * * * * * * * * * * “It’s creepy what they’re doing, but there will be many more of these companies. There is no monopoly on math,” said Al Gidari, a privacy professor at Stanford Law School. “Absent a very strong federal privacy law, we’re all screwed.” Edited January 20, 2020 by ICanSleepWhenI'mDead
Boca BIlls Posted January 20, 2020 Posted January 20, 2020 (edited) They been doing that for at least 4 years in North Jersey. You walk through and it says "welcome back (persons name)" it records visible tattoos also. Edited January 20, 2020 by Boca BIlls
Bad Things Posted January 20, 2020 Posted January 20, 2020 Jeez.. it wasn't that long ago when people in America actually cared about privacy. I guess a sense of "security" is more important nowadays.

SlimShady'sSpaceForce Posted January 20, 2020 Posted January 20, 2020 eye phones have had facial rec for a long time now
snafu Posted January 20, 2020 Posted January 20, 2020 Wherever you go, whatever you do, you're almost never alone. It's a damn shame. 1
ICanSleepWhenI'mDead Posted January 20, 2020 Author Posted January 20, 2020 The iphone recognizes its owner's face after the owner allows it to do that. The company mentioned in the article created an app that analyzes a stranger's face and allegedly compares it to over a billion images scraped from all over the internet and identifies the stranger, whether the stranger likes it or not. Both use facial recognition technology, but the Clearview app potentially has a much greater impact on your privacy. Just my opinion, but I think it's sad that so few people care about privacy these days. As the Stanford law professor said in the article - - "Absent a very strong federal privacy law, we're all screwed." 2
ScorpionZero Posted January 20, 2020 Posted January 20, 2020 We gave up the right to privacy the second the internet was invented. Anything that goes over a network connection is fair game, ask any hacker. Including all these posts. Social apps that everyone uses just makes it worse for us and easier for them. It went from 15 minutes of fame to 15 seconds. Which is about the same time as most people's attention span.
LeGOATski Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 The double edged sword is illustrated so clearly by this one sentence: Federal and state law enforcement officers said that while they had only limited knowledge of how Clearview works and who is behind it, they had used its app to help solve shoplifting, identity theft, credit card fraud, murder and child sexual exploitation cases.

T&C Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 Its not just Iphones... my samsung has facial recognition. Their newer ones are basically an Iphone that runs on android.
KD in CA Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 Did anyone think this wasn’t already the case? Facebook has been accurately suggesting picture tags for years and I’m sure they are not the most advanced game in town.

ICanSleepWhenI'mDead Posted January 23, 2020 Author Posted January 23, 2020 I realize this isn't everybody's cup of tea, but if anybody is interested in the history of how facial recognition technology evolved in its early years, there's some good stuff in this recently published Wired article: https://www.wired.com/story/secret-history-facial-recognition/?utm_source=pocket-newtab

You can also set app permissions. But nothing beats the piece of tape.
