I don’t want any scenario not involving Lawson.
Now if they offer him a fair deal and he chooses to leave for an over the top payday somewhere else I can’t be upset with anyone.
But I think shaq is the first real test to retaining your players for these guys it’s important to set an example. You can’t just let him leave and allocate that money somewhere else. He’s earned a fair free agent market kind of raise in my opinion.
I would like as many would some pass rushing talent brought into the rotation, but I wouldn’t let shaq walk away with no offer to do it.

Agreed.  Beane and McD talked about keeping the roster intact as much as possible.  I believe this means ponying up money for Shaq.  Drafting a DE I think is in their plans as well.

The chart is 2019 plus 3 different options for 2020. The $1.75M is dead money for Murphy in the options where he is cut or traded away.

Im guess I am reading it wrong.  It looks like the cap hit

did they draft Beasley, Brown, Morese, Kroft, Smith, Star, Poyer, Hyde, Murphy and the list goes on and on

No. However, they were trying to get to a competitive status while starting to build through the draft. At this point, and Beane as much as said so in his presser, they don't need to add as much through free agency - certainly not in the high dollar range. Their focus will always primarily be drafting and signing their own.

With that said, I absolutley see them targeting certain positions in free agency. I just don't see them targeting top dollar free agents.

$1.75M is the cap hit for him if he’s no longer on the team (aka dead cap).  The cap hit for him is $8.95M if he is here.

yeah because GMs always lay their plans out before the Offseason.

No need to be sarcastic. It is just an opinion based on Beane's philosophy. It doesn't mean he won't sign a top dollar free agent if he feels that is what the team needs. I just think he would prefer to not go after the top dollar free agents.

any of the top 3 DEs on the market this offseason would be monsters on our D.

yannick/clowney harrison oliver houghs w our back 7 would make converting those 3rd and 18s or two point conversions impossible.

Because in the other 16 games Trent was average to bad.
If the league average for cap allocation for the DE position as a whole is 15.3 million I don’t think the Bills should be paying 1 player almost $9 million who had below average production.

That's not true. For one, he was the Bills' best defender in the Jets finale. Not that it mattered to the Bills, but it mattered to the Jets.

$17 Mil for a player with 3 years experience?

fuggeddaboudit!!!

Now if he's had 5 or 6 good years ....  Maybe.

he's had 4 really nice years. he's averaged 9 sacks and 3 FF a year.... Also I don't know if I want them to pay the guy or not but IMO your thinking is completely backwards if i'm paying a guy its one who's coming into the prime years of his career not a guy that's already got 6 under his belt, most likely isn't gonna get much better, and probably regress before the contract is even close to being fulfilled.

I don’t necessarily want to cut him but he never once kept his contain this season and that’s likely because he was pressing and gambling because he knows his explosiveness is sapped from the injuries.

You see, I don't actually believe that. I thought he looked plenty explosive this season and I think the coaches felt so as well. He is a good-not-great player under contract, and the Bills are swimming in an ocean of cap space. Don't get rid of good, responsible players who know the system!

I've been saying this all year, reading in between the lines of the comments from McD and Beane, I absolutely believe the Bills believe they need another high end pass rusher.

That may come in the form of a DE like a Clowney or Yannick or an outside LB such as a Dupree or Judon.  I don't think it's a guarantee that they will get one because they will set a price for it and won't want to grossly overpay even though I do believe Beane will be willing to slightly overpay for one similar to what they did for Star L.

I think they make a hard run at the available Pass rushing specialists this year in FA.  I believe McD is craving for one and is in Beane's ear for him to try to get one.

You Cut Murphy, Kroft, Nsekhe and Yeldon..... that's $17M saved right there.

Tons of Fans will argue some of those guys above, but lets be honest, those dude are easy to replace.  Still have $90M in cap!!!

Using Info from Spotrac, I am sure if any of my quick assumptions are incorrect - this will be quickly pointed out. Here is what it would look like with us signing Yannickimage.png.5d3c2b4b2d429f6a07bdf292bab7dfc2.png

Just looking at the DE position overall with the players on our roster in 2019 and comparing the total contract value against next season using the following

1.) We don't resign Shaq, keep Trent & sign Yannick

2.)  We keep Shaq (I used his 5th year option total), cut Trent & sign Yannick

3.) We don't resign Shaq, cut Trent & sign Yannick

image.thumb.png.898eb3df78d5a2a88414fb3080a29727.png

Would you pay the extra $4 million in cap space for option 3 vs 2019?

Keep in mind the following: We spend more than the league average on DEs & both Beane and McD have said that we want to be aggressive and attacking with out front 4

image.thumb.png.a0dac6125e2a2976207307e034514fe0.png

As you can see we spend $25.5 million vs the League average of $13.2 million

We also have the potential to cut the $4 million extra down with the $3.75M saved by losing LorAx, who will most likely be replaced with a 2 down LB if sign a pass rushing DE. Here is a scenario:

image.png.59e46784dcade4962b5b894ae4183d1a.png

We are $3.9 million under in LB next year as a result.

We typically under spend at this position vs the league average:

Would you make this trade off?

I'd love Yannick but idk at if 17 mil per

Also the charts show that 3-4 teams pay much more on LB. 4-3 teams on DE , obviously , so it doesn't hold much weight.

I also look for Daryl Johnson to take a step in year 2 and is Murphy kinda hitting his stride? The last few gms Murphy was really balling out

Good thread, but in his presser, Beane straight out said "we wont be spending at the deep end of the FA pool"

I would love to see Yannick here, but I think we're not going to see Beane shell out the clams it would take.

I don't think he means player wise vs amount wise.....

I think he means they will control the cap through FA, they are not going to go spend $70M in cap space in FA......  But maybe $40-50 no doubt, that being said we don't need to fill a lot of high end positions.  Bills can go after a splash guy, and DE may be that position.  Cause even after Yannick they may still spend $20-30M..... still having $40-50M in space left...

Trent Murphy was a good (not great, but certainly disruptive, dependable, and good) player this past season and was one of the best players on the field vs. Houston. Why do Bills fans want to cut good players when they have $98 million in cap space???

Certainly is a dilemma, you have a solid veteran group, but we need a great player at the position to make difference, so you need to get rid of one and also keep Johnson who show flashes of good player(I'm against Ngakoue).

I didn't take that as they weren't going for big fish, but rather that they don't plan on making a bunch of outside moves.

Last year they signed 19 players from outside the org.

I expect a splash or 2 with maybe a handful of value signings at most.

I think Lawson is as good as gone. He wasn't given much of a chance to shine here, and some other team with terrible d-line problems will likely value him more than we do. I hope he comes back, but I'm not expecting it.

This has been my point for several years in different places, most fans don't understand the way this works, they only want a player that most times will never fullfil the expectations  or hype that surrounded him(OBJ is at top of the list)

First of all there is no way we would be paying him 17.1 million in salary the first year. He would likely be making the vet min or somewhere near there since they would have just given him a huge signing bonus.

I projected as best as I could with just a straight salary 5 years at 85 million is $17.1/season - granted the numbers will be off a bit or so in Yr1 with his bonuses and such. It is more of the exercise of salary committed to a positional role.
