Playoff #1 Bills @ Texans PostGame Thread

I agree that the play calling  in the second half was abysmal and there were a few drops (Texans had a few big drops, too, BTW), but Josh threw for under 6 YPA (almost 10 for Watson) and led the team 1 TD in 70 minutes.  Other than the disastrous sacks he took in the next to last possession of regulation, I’m struggling to think of particular examples where Josh screwed up badly, but I’m still a bit traumatized by what I witnessed this afternoon.  Josh didn’t make the plays that would have won the game, and Watson did.  And against a mediocre defense we again failed to score 20 points.  It’s just not accurate to say he did enough to win the game.

Here's where I'll leave it.  Josh is conditioned to play conservative, despite that it's against his nature and what makes him special.  We were up 16 at the half and clearly momentum in our favor.  It should have been at least 20-0 but our head coach is satisfied with 3 points far too much.

Then a team 0-22 or something when losing by 16 or more at halftime storms back.  Then we want Josh to all the sudden play hero ball going for it on 4th and 27?

They put him in position to fail and when he does I'm not blaming him.

The idiot McD said Josh tried to do too much.  Well you put him in that spot you offensive moron.

Next year is Allen's make or break year. Either he turns the corner in Year 3 or the rumblings will get loud.

I agree.  Unless Josh takes a step forward next year, I don’t know how you extend him.

He missed some shots to the end zone when they settled for one of their field goals. The fumble was obviously huge. Allen showed how great he can be but also how erratic. That being said not running the ball with Singletary in the 2nd half was a terrible mistake. Josh shouldn’t be throwing it 46 times.

Wow was it 46 times ? I know it was  an OT game, but if I’d been told before the game that Allen would pass 46 times I’d be almost certain the game was a loss. Probably trailing for most of the game too, not a 16 point lead.

Can’t argue with any of that.  The complete abandonment of Singletary in the second half and especially OT was unforgivable.

Yupp. 46 times. 26 in the 2nd half alone, with a 16 point lead.

If Allen doesn't take a step next year, which is likely being with this HC, then McD needs to go.

I just can't believe how some of you guys don't see how this HC and OC are pulling the total offense down.  They are not showing themselves capable of developing a young QB.

Have to see them with a full arsenal. Not liking the tendencies of Daboll. He’s good for a splash play here and there, but too many head scratching strategies and lack of situational awareness.

They had Dimarco out there as an X receiver in overtime.  I mean wow.  That alone is a fireable offense.  And they've done that several times before in games.  Then Singletary comes in as an X and catches one for 14.

They are killing this second year QB.

My thoughts exactly. Josh looks so good when he’s allowed to play freely. McD needs to find someone who can scheme around Joshes skill set  and give them full play calling duties for next year.

He also almost threw a near six-pick or two, fumbled twice (one lost) and tossed the ball away on one of the most mind-numbing plays I've ever seen.

Like I always say, it's not how many great plays you make; it's how few bad ones you make. I know fans, and even some losing coaches, are enamored with long pass completions or the great run plays, but that doesn't offset the interception or the fumble.

Totally agree man.  I just heard schopp describe these plays as 'desperate', sorry but it's the accurate word to describe what I saw on the plays. Like there's a desperation to score right there and then.

Really good QBs don't make dumb plays, that's my concern.

They do when they are as raw as Allen, he was the least ready of the QBs when he came out, he definitely had some had scratchers today, but he has learned from his mistakes and i believe he will from this as well. Drew Brees wasnt good his first two years but his third year finally figured it out. Allen has a ways to go but he will get there.

I'm 24. This was unambiguously the best season that anyone my age or younger can honestly remember or have processed in real time. Thank you Bills.

Please see and make the improvements that are obvious. My expectations for next season are raised. I want the division, and/or a playoff win. This is the first time I've ever been able to realistically set them this high. McBeane, you've done well to this point. We need that next step.

You’re wise beyond your years, dude, and perhaps being unburdened by history helps brighten your perspective.

For the first time in a long time the arrow is pointing up for us. Am I satisfied with how this season just ended? Hell no. But that doesn’t preclude being happy about the progress we’ve made in the last 3 years.

I look forward to this off-season and seeing what additional good moves our front office makes.

Is it so difficult to hand the ball to Singletary more often. Why is Josh throwing 46 passes in a game they are leading for 3 1/2 qtrs? Why is Frank Gore getting 8 rushes while Singletary gets only 13? Why is the backfield empty in ot when all they needed was a fg?

i cannot figure out why all of US see this and the coaching staff doesn't?

during the OT, I kept saying why are we going empty backfield. It felt like the coaches did not realize we were not in a 2 minute drill?

Exactly.  How does a HC say our 2nd year QB is trying to do too much in empty backfield sets?

It's mind numbingly stupid.

Bad loss, but we all knew this wasn't a team that was ready to go deep in play offs or even make playoffs for that matter. If Allen can keep improving we might have something special. Still proud to be a Bill's fan, not to mention 99% of the haters out there are band Wagoners and just like to hate on the Bill's. The Bill's mafia always stays true to their team

It was questionable for sure, but they let Josh "be Josh."

Isn't this exactly what his hardcore fans wanted?

Also, there is a difference between playing smart and playing wreckless.  He let the moment overcome him.
