stony Posted January 2, 2020 Posted January 2, 2020 Best commissioner of any sport over the the last 30 years. Accessible, witty, loved a good scrap with fans or media. The opposite of Goodell or Bettman.

row_33 Posted January 2, 2020 Posted January 2, 2020 He was the mastermind that dreamed this fiasco up on behalf of the NBA... "The owners of the Spirits, the brothers Ozzie and Daniel Silna, struck a prescient deal to acquire future television money from the teams that joined the NBA, a 1/7 share from each franchise (or nearly 2% of the entire NBA's TV money), in perpetuity. With network TV deals becoming more and more lucrative, the deal has made the Silnas wealthy, earning them $186 million as of 2008, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, and $255 million as of 2012 according to The New York Times. (The NBA nearly succeeded in buying out the Silnas in 1982 by offering $5 million over eight years, but negotiations stalled when the siblings demanded $8 million over five.) On June 27, 2007, it was extended for another 8 years, ensuring another $100 million+ windfall for the Silnas. In 2014, the Silnas reached agreement with the NBA to greatly reduce the perpetual payments and take a lump sum of $500 million. In the last few years before the lump sum agreement, the Silnas were receiving $14.57 million a year, despite being owners of a team that hadn't played one minute of basketball in more than 35 years. " a few have joked about how many profanity-laced meetings spent screaming at subordinates that Stern must have inflicted to face the music over 3 decades. 1
thenorthremembers Posted January 2, 2020 Posted January 2, 2020 I think he oversaw one of the greatest eras of basketball. Whats going on now is unwatchable and foolish. This midseason tournament idea if hogwash.

He came up with the idea for the Braves and Celtics ownership to swap teams... Because Celtics owner wanted to move west. We became the out. They swapped, team moved. Sold right down the river to save the Celtics.
row_33 Posted January 2, 2020 Posted January 2, 2020 Stern helped the game become a major sport in the US, Bird and Magic certainly helped the cause. Until the mid80s the Buffalo CBS affiliate would tape delay the Finals games on weeknights and play them at 2 in the morning. I remember staying up till 3 in the morning to watch Magic's game 6 in the 1980 finals and Bird's first title in 1981.
Miyagi-Do Karate Posted January 2, 2020 Posted January 2, 2020 Absolutely brilliant leader. It’s funny seeing these other Sports commissioners in comparison to him.

Wait, we're blaming Stern for the fact the Braves were effectively the third tenant at the Aud? Freaking Canisius had dibs for prime dates ahead of the Braves. This wasn't conducive to long-term success. The league gave them time to figure this out. Unfortunately they didn't. I don't blame Stern for this.

LOL they had a solid team that was well supported, they were never getting past Big E and Hondo, then completely destroyed the talent in town overnight.

Sadly, its true. Sabres had first scheduling rights, Canisius had second. Braves were third. 15 minutes ago, ExiledInIllinois said: No. Blaming Stern for coming up with the plan. Braves played a handful of games in Toronto each year, and good opponents, got to see Maravich and Havlicek Came close to the C's going west, they were garbage at this time, getting ready to steal Bird and Parish and build a dynasty to last a decade 1

Just get Buffalo out of the way first. Heck, Dallas got a team in 1980.

John Brown sold off all the best talent after Snyder sold half his shares to him. Blame him. Writing was on the wall after that.

Toronto brought in ABA exhibition games, the Braves, the Globetrotters, but nothing serious was even contemplated until the 1990s Edited January 2, 2020 by row_33 1
